Just a friendly reminder. If the US had taken only a small fraction of the money and military equipment it has squandered fighting and losing to Iran, and instead helped Ukraine, the Middle East would be more stable and Russia would be facing defeat.

“The real cost is not to the United States, it’s to the Iranian people. Because Trump said, ‘Help is on the way.” And help was not on the way. And now this deal will enshrine the Iranian regime, for a generation, with American support and cooperation, and send a message to people all over the world who are brave enough to stand up to their dictators and despots, that when America says help is on the way, that doesn’t mean anything.” “And that’s the real cost of this. It’s that we’ve promised the Iranian people that we care about their lives, and now we are throwing them to the wolves. No matter what happens with the $300 billion or the Strait of Hormuz, those people will have to wait another several years before they get another chance at dignity. And it’s partially our fault, for raising their hopes and then squashing them unceremoniously because Trump just changed his mind and doesn’t care anymore.”

It's actually can't be overstated how much an anchor these people have been on our party. All of the most extreme positions they've take (open borders, defund the police, etc etc) gets lumped in to the Dem 'brand.' People say 'oh why do you care if DSA guy wins in a D+50 seat' and the answer is that, everything is nationalized now and their extreme positions will get disproportionate play on both social media and the traditional media. Doesn't matter how much you say you don't support it. If you're explaining, you're losing. It's very bad.

All Deportation is Wrong? Even for criminal offenses? Darializa replies: "That phrase, yes, I still think all deportations are wrong."

There's a temptation for the center-Left to see the DSA as the hot new thing, especially as they lean into a quasi-YIMBY aesthetic. I think that's a mistake, because their policies won't actually solve cities' problems, but also because the DSA is *crazy*. substacktools.com/sharex/4YocZbd9

After the DSA wins New York, Seattle, DC, and (potentially) the LA mayoral races, I think the center left needs to acknowledge that its infrastructure in major American cities is broken, that we are being flatly out-organized, and settling for uninspiring candidates.

@Toa_AU @football360au Nobody in the US thought the team was amazing. Grella is a fool. If anything, many of us thought we were going to get grouped or finish 3rd, judging by recent results and performance. Hence the excitement after the Paraguay game.

@football360au You see we don’t think we are amazing unlike you snobby yanks, I hope we humble you when we play. We are the underdogs and have nothing to lose. We have everything to gain.

'The MOST HATED man in Australia' is at it AGAIN ahead of Socceroos v USA 🗣🇦🇺🇺🇸 US pundit Mike Grella says we should build him a statue if the Socceroos 'do something' at this World Cup - and he has a message back to Harry Kewell. And now he wants to 'let the football do the talking'. Bit late for that mate... 😅

While there are legitimate uses of non-profits, the pretense of not having profits or owners obscures a lot of things such as strong incentives of acting in private interest of whoever is in control.
Florian Ederer@florianederer

For people asking why FIFA, nominally a non-profit, is trying to maximize profits: This is what your ticket prices are paying for. A completely gratuitous waste of resources, further enabled by the Qatari regime.

I think this is a good example of someone thinking that the way it works in movies is the way it works in real life. Michael Bloomberg spent hundreds of millions to be president. He won the American Somoa primary. Tom Steyer just came in third in the California primary. Jeffrey Epstein died in jail. Money can buy a lot. It doesn’t make you Lex Luther or Blofeld.
Lewis, William... William@WillLewis_1976

Elon is rich enough he could make anyone he wants completely disappear, and no one would do anything about it. I really don't think some of you people realize how much power you are handing over to him. He got the the rules for IPOs changed. He gets laws changed. He gets people elected. He can make people start wars. There are a set of laws for normal people. There are a set for rich people... and then there are a whole new level for people like Elon.

This stuff is insufferable. Just enjoy the team. McKennie was awesome and grew up here. Pulisic was a terrific- I saw him doing rabonas in Pennsylvania as a youth player. We’re Americans. The whole point is we have a variety of ways to accomplish things.
Franklin Leonard@franklinleonard

Notable that not one of the three real stars of this match - Flo Balogun, Sergino Dest, and Malik Tillman - grew up playing the game in the American youth system.

Most people don't understand the difference between having billions in the bank, liquid, & having ownership shares in companies worth billions. And I think it would behoove the media to explain this once in a while.

@FranciscoPoleoR I agree. While the interview with Trump I support, it's always appalling how journalists and academics soft peddle interviews and research--even fawn over them --with isolated dictators to maintain access--60+ years of that for Cuba.

Oslo Freedom Forum (OFF)
Claudia Ortiz entered politics to defend democracy from the inside. At the Oslo Freedom Forum, the Salvadoran legislator reflects on states of exception, mass arrests, corruption, and the growing cost of speaking out against tyranny in El Salvador. Her story is not just a warning about authoritarianism, but an account of what happens when fear becomes government policy.
