In November 2010, Matthew Hoffman committed a series of murders in Mount Vernon, Ohio, that culminated in one of the most bizarre crime scenes in FBI history. In 2010, after k*lling three people and kidnapping a 13-year-old girl, Matthew Hoffman held the survivor captive in his home for four days. When police raided the residence, they discovered the interior was almost entirely filled with thousands of bags of dried leaves. Hoffman had created deep piles and "nests" of leaves across every room, which he used for insulation and as a ritualistic sleeping area. The case grew even stranger when Hoffman, a former tree trimmer, revealed where he had hidden the bodies of his victims. Rather than burying them, he had climbed a massive, 60-foot hollow beech tree in a nearby wildlife preserve. He meticulously di*membered the victims and lowered their remains into the hollow center of the trunk. Authorities were forced to use chainsaws to cut a window into the base of the tree to recover the remains. Hoffman’s motivations were linked to a deep-seated obsession with nature and "primitive" survival. He claimed the leaves provided him with comfort and a sense of camouflage from the world. In 2011, he pleaded guilty to the murders and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
