What does the recent public market downturn mean for private markets? As history shows, there's typically a 2-3 quarter lag before public market changes fully impact private markets. Here's what we might expect: 1. Investor oversight will tighten. GPs will push portfolio companies to reduce burn rates and fast-track profitability. Expect closer management of investments and potential restructuring. 2. Valuations will likely decline. As public market comparables suffer, even solid private companies may see mark-downs. The gap between B2C and B2B valuations could narrow. 3. Fundraising will slow. LPs may reduce allocations to privates due to heightened risk and the "denominator effect." This could make it harder for GPs to raise capital. 4. Exit strategies may shift. With a soft IPO market, investors might explore unconventional exits like mergers or sales to non-financial strategics. 5. B2C companies may face bigger challenges than B2B firms due to less sticky relationships and higher customer acquisition costs. 6. Employees and founders could feel a disproportionate impact as common stock value declines more than preferred shares. 7. On the bright side, this may be more similar to 1987's market crash than the beginning of a recession and the economy could avoid a downturn.
