🎉🕊️ A remarkable milestone of strength and resilience
Malka Horwitz, Miami-Dade County’s oldest verified living Holocaust survivor, celebrated her 110th birthday on Monday — a powerful reminder of resilience, history, and the strength of the human spirit.
Born in Lithuania, Horwitz was just 25 years old when she was imprisoned in the Vilna Ghetto during World War II, a Jewish ghetto established by Nazi Germany in Vilnius. Reflecting on that unimaginable time, Horwitz shared with Jewish Community Services (JCS) of South Florida:
“In ‘41 they came to take me and my husband, and my child was two-and-a-half years old.”
Horwitz was separated from her young son, and many of her family members were killed during the Holocaust — including her husband, parents, and sister. After the war, she escaped Europe and found refuge in Cuba, later immigrating to the United States with her two children, where she rebuilt her life.
Today, she is one of more than 400 Holocaust survivors in Miami-Dade County who receive meals and homecare through JCS of South Florida. Her life stands as a living testament to survival, courage, and the importance of remembering history while honoring those who endured

A New Jersey man named Bill Sumiel, who urgently needed a kidney transplant, received an unexpected miracle during a routine Uber ride. In 2021, he was being transported to and from a dialysis appointment arranged by Christiana Hospital when he struck up a conversation with his driver, Tim Letts. During the ride, Sumiel shared his health struggles and the fact that he was desperately waiting for a donor. Moved by the story, Letts told him he felt they were meant to meet and offered to donate his own kidney on the spot.
Remarkably, the two turned out to be a match, and the transplant surgery was successfully completed. The life-saving procedure not only restored Sumiel’s health but also created a lasting bond between the two men, who became close friends after their chance encounter. What began as a simple car ride turned into a powerful act of kindness, with Sumiel describing the experience as nothing short of a miracle that reinforced his belief in hope and humanity.
