It took 🇪🇺European justice 8 years, but it is finally over: Google was ordered by EU’s top court to pay €4.1 billion for “blocking” rivals on its Android mobile operating system. The European Commission had originally handed the fine in 2018. 3 ways in which Google had acted illegally: - requiring Android handset and tablet manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and its own web browser Chrome as a condition of allowing them to offer access to its Play App Store; - making payments to large manufacturers and mobile network operators that agreed to exclusively pre-install the Google Search app on their devices; - preventing manufacturers from selling any smart devices powered by alternative "forked" versions of Android by threatening to refuse them permission to pre-install its apps. It was acknowledged that Google's version of Android does not prevent device owners downloading alternative web browsers or using other search engines. Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai said: the EC “decision rejects the business model that supports Android, which has created more choice for everyone, not less." This is one of 3 biggest fines by Brussels on Google. In September 2024 it fined the company with €2.4 billion for abusing its market dominance in shopping-comparison services. In September 2025 the European Commission fined the search giant €2.95 billion, finding it had breached competition laws by favouring its own products for displaying online ads, to the detriment of rivals. If it’s indeed correct that Google is an abusive monopoly, do these fines really hurt: A) Yes; B) No?
