Very pleased to share our latest, out today in @CellCellPress. cell.com/cell/fulltext/… We looked at the role of prefrontal neurons in a rodent model of cross-sensory attention shifting, and get this...

This is such an important editorial!!! We are the gatekeepers: Let a paper be ‘a moment in time'. Allow your review to be constructive and nurturing. If it is novel, and rigorous, publish it. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

🐙 ALERT! So when you put an octopus in cold water it recodes 13,000 codons (1/3 of all recoding sites!) via massive RNA editing in the brain!! And this apparently alters the function of synaptic proteins! 🤯🤯🤯 That’s insane (but not for the octopus) cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Old acquaintance asks for meeting. I invite him to drinks w me and a few founders. He wants to know who is attending before committing, to avoid wasting time w irrelevant early stage founders. Fair question or offensive?

I believe in MERIT. The issue is that historical systems in the US excluded the poor, women, and racially minoritized groups from competing. Multiple practices have allowed the impacts of this exclusion to persist. 1/5.

Fake news released by @DukeU . It is simply not true that anything just got 60million times better. High magnetic field has been used on rodents for a long time with massively higher resolution than 1.5T scans on humans. Seriously. This is bad. today.duke.edu/2023/04/brain-…

(1/4) Excited to share our perspective article with @EngelTatiana and @MGENK out today in Nature Reviews Neuroscience! We highlight work which unifies the neural manifold and circuit perspectives on cognition and argue that they are inseparable. nature.com/articles/s4158…

The idea is simple, comparing spiking versus non spiking is hopelessly confounded. However, comparing almost spiking with barely spiking isnt. This is an application of the idea called "regression discontinuity design" in the causality community to a set of neuroscience problems.

New paper (cell.com/cell-stem-cell…) from the lab out today! @yadlee2 & team report a circuit-based strategy to enhance hippocampal neurogenesis in Alzheimer's mice. Activation of circuit-modified new neurons restores cognition, hippocampal plasticity, and microglia dynamics.

Ironically, but predictably, GWAS has entered the same rabbit hole, spawning myriad bogus hypotheses (cf a lot of polygenic score claims/uses). It’s a deep and pervasive structural and social flaw in modern science.
Daniel MacArthur@dgmacarthur

@cshperspectives @drugmonkeyblog @WiringTheBrain I don’t think there’s anything special about the candidate gene era - strong hypotheses + many cryptic degrees of freedom + publication bias led to high false positive rates, like much of current biomedicine. The only difference is that there was a reckoning, due to GWAS.

AI writes the paper. AI reviews the paper. AI rejects the paper. AI sends to paper to another AI. New AI says revise and resubmit. AI revises and resubmits. AI accepts paper. AI tweets about the paper. 1/
