@DrCameronMurray Hi Cameron. As someone that spent my career building the algos and biz models to “engage and monetise attention” I can give you a dozen reasons why social media is harmful. I am not saying a blanket ban is the solution.Comparing social media to terrestrial TV is way off the mark

Australia's social media ban stupidly rolls along.
I get that people feel like social media can be problematic for kids. That doesn't mean a national ban is a solution to you specific concern.
Has anyone asked exactly what the problem is that this is meant to solve?
I grew up in an era when the fear was that kids were watching too much tv and that would give us all square eyes and mushed brains. But it was fine.
We evolve social norms to adapt and that is already happening. Schools keep phones out of classrooms. Seems sensible. We will keep adapting.
Most youngsters are even moving on from Insta, Facebook, etc and mostly using platforms as group chat tools to coordinate real life activities and share memes and jokes with mates. That all seems good.
They use youtube to learn as well as to zone out.

Chasing the magic number - when will the AMOC collapse? We know it can collapse. Has collapse many times. And we are moving towards collapse. IPCC puts probability to < 10%. Low? Oh no, For a catastrophic event, this is VERY high. World needs to wake up. insideclimatenews.org/news/09022024/…

The govt collects more money from HECS than it does from the PRRT.
Australians are missing out on revenue for public services while fossil fuel companies make record profits. We need to increase the PRRT #auspol

Coal, oil and gas companies – including @SantosLtd and @WoodsideEnergy – gave over $1.78 MILLION to Australia's political parties last year.
Surprising no-one, these donations occurred right as the government chose to approve new fossil fuel projects.

The global food system must change. Just like climate policy requires a focus across the entire value chain for emission reductions, the food industry must do the same. Important global policy report launch with PIK expertise next Monday in Berlin & online.

More disappointing divisive politicking from the Coalition sadly - again trying to further stoke social disharmony in Australia
I guess that’s what you have to resort to when you have no policy agenda
