Odysseus is involved in several graphic violent scenes in Homer’s The Odyssey. In one, the Cyclops Polyphemus devours several of his men alive. Odysseus then blinds the giant by driving a heated, sharpened olive-wood stake into his single eye. These scenes, and others for sure, explain why a committed adaptation like Nolan’s would naturally receive an R rating for intense and graphic violence.
