On January 25, 1966, Lockheed test pilot Bill Weaver survived the disintegration of his SR-71 Blackbird while traveling at Mach 3.18 at an altitude of 78,800 feet. The accident occurred during a high-speed test flight when a right engine inlet unstart caused the aircraft to break apart under extreme aerodynamic stress. Weaver was physically thrown from the cockpit and lost consciousness instantly: however, his full-pressure suit functioned as an emergency escape capsule, providing oxygen and maintaining pressure to prevent his blood from boiling in the thin atmosphere. He eventually regained consciousness during his parachute descent and landed safely on a ranch near the New Mexico border, making his survival one of the most remarkable events in the history of aviation.
