I don’t believe for one second that Tesla is planning on upgrading hardware 3 vehicles that have not purchased lifetime FSD. There is absolutely no incentive or requirement for Tesla to spend the money to change hardware on a seven-year-old vehicle just because someone may or may not be paying a monthly subscription. The answer is simple. They will drop the monthly subscription for supervised FSD. They will make supervised FSD as good as possible on these hardware three vehicles without replacing expensive compute. Then they will likely upgrade everyone that purchased lifetime FSD to either get them in a new vehicle or retrofit their existing vehicle. There will be more opportunities for hardware three owners to parlay their license into a new vehicle. If Elon said anything during that call that was meant to tap down the stock price it was definitely this idea that they are going to upgrade every single Tesla on the road to a hardware 4 equivalent. There is zero chance that that’s going to happen. Tesla has zero requirement or incentive to do so.

To all HW3 owners, I understand your frustration. I see many people saying that it’s a lie from Elon and Tesla, etc., but I believe rather that I wouldn’t call it a lie. I’d rather say it’s an overestimation on the part of Elon and Tesla. We also have to remember that vision-based autonomous driving is a new technology, so it’s difficult to predict. Nevertheless, I still find it honest of them to propose several solutions to remedy it.

HW3 FSD Unsupervised. Update: - HW3 not be able to achieve Unsupervised FSD. HW3 has only 1/8 of memory bandwidth of AI4, memory bandwidth is the key elements needed for Unsupervised FSD. Solution: - For customers who bought FSD, Tesla will offer a discounted trade-in for AI4 car. - We will also be offering the ability to upgrade the HW3 car, to replace the computer and camera to AI4. Approach: - Tesla will setup micro/small factories in major metropolitan areas. Need mini production lines to make the change. - Overtime makes sense for Tesla to upgrade all HW3 vehicles. Because that's what will enable them to enter the Robotaxi Fleet and achieve Unsupervised FSD. Ashok: In the meantime, Tesla will release V14 for HW3, distilled version of V14 for AI4. People able to drive from park state and have all the features V14 for AI4 has. Expected to come end of June.
