This is only "weird" to people who refuse to accept or are discomfited by the fact that (1) straight cishetero white men are not the default identity that serve as the point of reference for all other people & (2) Republicans are disproprotionately those kinds of people. So QED.
Bobby LaValley@Bobby_LaVallley
Texas Democrat James Talarico is a weird dude. He described Republican colleagues as "straight cisgendered men."

@cannot_stop_ish @maklelan I can read, by the way. You weren't consistent. If you think the problem started in the Obama years, why bring up Biden at all? I defended him because you brought him up. By all means, let's focus on this "centering" of gender identity you say happened under Obama. I'm all ears.
English

@hyloguy @maklelan I don't want to get into a semantic debate over the term "center."
Certainly, the Obama administration itself believed that it took "unprecedented steps to protect and promote the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming Americans."

English

@cannot_stop_ish @maklelan Such as? What major *new* gender-identity policies were advanced during either of Obama's terms that you think constitute "centering" gender identity?
English

@cannot_stop_ish @maklelan Seriously? You think this started with Biden?? That was in response to the crusade AGAINST trans folks that took off in Trump's first term.
- banning trans folks from military service
- bathroom bills
- rollbacks on nondiscrimination protections
Trans rights were UNDER ATTACK.

@lovecraft_1080p @SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski They said some positive things about Mamdani, but again, this is just goalpost shifting.
The NYT called on Cuomo to step down as governor after his scandal. When he later ran for mayor, they again explicitly called out his ethical issues and the sexual harassment allegations.

They say that they do not make endorsements in these races any longer, but only have one candidate in for which they say nothing positive. They even specifically mention that in a two-way matchup, Mamdani is weaker. It's about as clear as you can get.

@BrianLRidings @Timodc @glukianoff Being "unpersoned" doesn't have to do with the severity of abuse. It's about systematic action taken by a community to mark someone as dangerous and exclude them. Lots of hostile mentions isn't the same as being put on a list of 'unsafe' people that circulates through a network.
English

@cannot_stop_ish @Timodc @glukianoff His point is he’s received enough opprobrium, slurs and threats to last several lifetimes, but he’s still person-ed. So, not so much a straw-man as a one-to-one comparison.
English

Hey Tim, I’m happy to be an ally on free speech issues. But I literally wrote a book about cancel culture, and I’m not going to participate in the collective amnesia surrounding what happened between 2014 and 2024. We can debate causes, consequences, scope, and definitions. What we can’t honestly do is pretend it never happened.

“unpersoned” but still posting. The great awokenings very own Lazurus.
English

@Djengo44 @KyleKulinski In another editorial where they stopped short of explicitly endorsing Cuomo and very clearly acknowledged his sex scandal and noted "serious objections to his ethics and conduct."
You can criticize the NYT without saying clearly false things, which is what Kyle is doing.

English

@cannot_stop_ish @KyleKulinski Damn it's almost as if he was being heavily pushed for a different position after this happened.
English

@SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski You can certainly argue it's implied by the framing, but they don't explicitly say that.
Either way, you've shifted the goal post pretty wildly away from what the original post claims, which is false on multiple levels.

English

@cannot_stop_ish @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski I literally just proved they said to vote against Zohran lmao
English

@SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski They didn't say that, either, even if you think it was implied by their framing. You keep saying false things.
English

@cannot_stop_ish @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski It is 100% true. They didn't say to vote against Cuomo, they said to vote against Zohran. Meaning they find his sex scandals not that important and Zohran supporting Palestine way worse lmao politico.com/newsletters/ne…
English

@SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski That's not true, and even if it were, it's not equivalent to memory holing the sex scandal, which they explicitly detailed and noted their "serious objections to his ethics and conduct."
English

@cannot_stop_ish @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski Their endorsement was "vote against Mamdani" which anyone with a brain can infer that meant vote Cuomo, since he was the only other viable candidate in the primary
English

@cannot_stop_ish @KyleKulinski forgetting they had a change of opinion in 2025
English

@JackInacker "Lemmie get this straight" is almost always a good signal that the commentator does not, in fact, have things straight.
English

@Timodc @glukianoff A straw man characterization, followed by a non-sequitur: “well, you should see the things that people say about me, a person whose job is to get into political fights online.”
English

@cannot_stop_ish @glukianoff a random person called her a predator ? look at my mentions every day lol. welcome to the thunderdome.
English

@Brendan_F_Wendt @CathyYoung63 @glukianoff Differentiating angst over Biden’s mental decline from political criticism is a bit too precious for my taste.
But it's not defending or excusing Trump. Part of Kat’s point in this exchange is that calling insufficiently anti-Trump commentary Trump apologia is silly.
English

@cannot_stop_ish @CathyYoung63 @glukianoff For an example of sorts which, ah, hasn't aged well (I still follow Kat for the baseball and Connecticut humor, since I also live in southwestern CT):

English

@cenkuygur @grahamformaine @CoryBooker Establishment Democrats ultimately pressured Biden should step down and the same thing is happening here.
English

Democrats are now attacking @grahamformaine with no shame. Same Democrats who told us to "vote blue, no matter who" when it was to back establishment candidates are now stabbing Platner in the back. Why? Guys like @CoryBooker 100% work for Israel. That's who is organizing this.
