@hyloguy @maklelan Just by way of clarifying our disagreement, do you see any important distinctions between criticizing anti-Black racism and talking about the problem of whiteness?

@hyloguy @maklelan I'm referring specifically to what Talarico is doing in the posted clip, which is defining the Republican caucus by its predominate sexual orientation and gender identity.

@hyloguy @maklelan You're misunderstanding. I think the timeline is different from your characterization. But, regardless, Biden's "no compromise" tweet shows that whatever the impetus, Democrats chose to plant a flag on this issue. That's centrality, regardless of who drew first blood.

@cannot_stop_ish @maklelan I can read, by the way. You weren't consistent. If you think the problem started in the Obama years, why bring up Biden at all? I defended him because you brought him up. By all means, let's focus on this "centering" of gender identity you say happened under Obama. I'm all ears.

@hyloguy @maklelan No . . . I pretty clearly said going back to Obama's first term. By Obama's second term, the admin was already advancing major gender-identity policies in schools, employment, healthcare, and the military, and those policies were generating substantial national debate.

@cannot_stop_ish @maklelan Seriously? You think this started with Biden?? That was in response to the crusade AGAINST trans folks that took off in Trump's first term. - banning trans folks from military service - bathroom bills - rollbacks on nondiscrimination protections Trans rights were UNDER ATTACK.

@lovecraft_1080p @SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski They said some positive things about Mamdani, but again, this is just goalpost shifting. The NYT called on Cuomo to step down as governor after his scandal. When he later ran for mayor, they again explicitly called out his ethical issues and the sexual harassment allegations.

@hyloguy @maklelan In 2020, a year before he become president, Biden called trans equality "the civil rights issue of our time" and said there was "no room for compromise" on it.

@hyloguy @maklelan I really don't think the timeline supports this. Yes, conservatives elevated trans issues into a national wedge issue, but that happened after years of progressive politicians, activists, and institutions centering gender identity, going back to Obama's first term.

@BrianLRidings @Timodc @glukianoff Being "unpersoned" doesn't have to do with the severity of abuse. It's about systematic action taken by a community to mark someone as dangerous and exclude them. Lots of hostile mentions isn't the same as being put on a list of 'unsafe' people that circulates through a network.

@cannot_stop_ish @Timodc @glukianoff His point is he’s received enough opprobrium, slurs and threats to last several lifetimes, but he’s still person-ed. So, not so much a straw-man as a one-to-one comparison.

Hey Tim, I’m happy to be an ally on free speech issues. But I literally wrote a book about cancel culture, and I’m not going to participate in the collective amnesia surrounding what happened between 2014 and 2024. We can debate causes, consequences, scope, and definitions. What we can’t honestly do is pretend it never happened. a.co/d/0byOvETN

@Djengo44 @KyleKulinski In another editorial where they stopped short of explicitly endorsing Cuomo and very clearly acknowledged his sex scandal and noted "serious objections to his ethics and conduct." You can criticize the NYT without saying clearly false things, which is what Kyle is doing.

@SuperSmashjo @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski You can certainly argue it's implied by the framing, but they don't explicitly say that. Either way, you've shifted the goal post pretty wildly away from what the original post claims, which is false on multiple levels.

@cannot_stop_ish @B17Fortres @KyleKulinski Their endorsement was "vote against Mamdani" which anyone with a brain can infer that meant vote Cuomo, since he was the only other viable candidate in the primary

@JackInacker "Lemmie get this straight" is almost always a good signal that the commentator does not, in fact, have things straight.

So lemmie get this straight: Graham Platner wrote sexual texts to consenting women, *3 years* before he was a candidate, realized he fucked up, was honest about it, apologized to his wife, and then went to marriage counseling? This is why y’all are big mad?

@Timodc @glukianoff A straw man characterization, followed by a non-sequitur: “well, you should see the things that people say about me, a person whose job is to get into political fights online.”

@Brendan_F_Wendt @CathyYoung63 @glukianoff Differentiating angst over Biden’s mental decline from political criticism is a bit too precious for my taste. But it's not defending or excusing Trump. Part of Kat’s point in this exchange is that calling insufficiently anti-Trump commentary Trump apologia is silly.

Democrats are now attacking @grahamformaine with no shame. Same Democrats who told us to "vote blue, no matter who" when it was to back establishment candidates are now stabbing Platner in the back. Why? Guys like @CoryBooker 100% work for Israel. That's who is organizing this.
