@GuntherEagleman You'd think that such a renowned justice would at least have a clerk do a tiny amount of research to see what the drafters of the amendment might have thought "jurisdiction" meant. We're all doomed in this country.

Justice Kagan tried to pin Solicitor General Sauer into a corner during arguments over birthright citizenship, suggesting the challengers' position relied on some esoteric theory rather than the plain text.
Sauer dismantled that by going straight to the source. The men who actually wrote the 14th Amendment and its predecessor Civil Rights Act defined "jurisdiction" as requiring complete allegiance to the United States, not foreign powers.
Temporary visitors, diplomats, and those not domiciled with full loyalty were never intended to pass on automatic citizenship to their children born here.
This wasn't some fringe idea cooked up later. It was the consistent understanding for decades, backed by congressional debates, treatises, and early cases.
Modern claims of universal birthright citizenship for everyone physically present ignore what the framers actually said.
Time to restore the real 14th Amendment.

The bloodthirsty regime in Iran is preparing to commit yet another unforgivable crime.
Reports confirm that at least five sons of Iran who courageously took to the streets on January 8th and 9th—Mohammad Amin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast Kolowr, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, Amirhossein Hatami, Ali Fahim, and potentially more—have been moved from their ward and transferred to an unknown location for likely execution.
These young men are condemned not for anything they did, but because of what they represent. This regime’s sham courts do not seek justice, they seek to terrorize Iran into silence. They will fail.
I call on @drmaisato and @UN_HRC and other international human rights institutions to urgently intervene to save the lives of these innocent young heroes.
