While Tesla is ramping Optimus Gen 3 for internal factory use (with high-volume external sales expected in 2027), a Chinese upstart just filed one of the most significant humanoid robotics IPOs in history. On March 20th 2026, Unitree Robotics submitted its application to list on Shanghai’s STAR Market, seeking to raise $610 million. This would make Unitree one of the first major pure-play humanoid companies to go public. Founded in 2016 by Wang Xingxing, a young mechanical engineering grad, Unitree started with agile quadruped robots (Go1, Go2) that went viral for their performance and affordability. They then pivoted into humanoids, and it paid off. In 2025 alone, their revenue exploded 335% to $248 million. They shipped over 5,500 humanoid robots, claiming the #1 global position by volume (representing around 32% of the worldwide market that year). Unitree’s lineup is already shipping worldwide to research labs, educators, and early industrial pilots. They’re targeting 10,000–20,000 humanoid shipments in 2026 and massive capacity expansion (up to 75,000 humanoids annually long term). The IPO proceeds will fuel embodied AI R&D, new products, and a smart manufacturing base. So should Tesla be afraid? Well the real race has yet to begin.
