@itsolelehmann So if AI makes housing cheaper and then a lot people will get on board. but if you make housing cheaper, everyone who already owns homes loses will be less wealthy - and then they will fight you.

Jeff Bezos just bet $12 billion that you'll be able to support your whole family on a single paycheck again. his reasoning: AI will let companies make more stuff with fewer people and less money. and when something gets cheaper and easier to produce, and lots of companies can do it, they compete and the price drops. it's why a flatscreen TV that cost $2,000 a decade ago is $300 today. bezos thinks AI will do that to almost everything you buy. in his words, it raises "the basket of goods people can afford." your paycheck buys more without anyone handing you a raise. the problem: look at which prices have actually dropped. so far, AI has only made *digital* things cheap, like code and content. but the stuff that really eats your paycheck is *physical*. rent, cars, medicine. cheaper code doesn't lower your rent. that's exactly what bezos just spent $12B on. Prometheus, his new company, is building AI tools that help engineers design and manufacture physical products faster things like cars, machines, and medicine. the goal is to make building physical things as fast and cheap as writing software. if it works, 1 income starts covering what used to take 2. which is when his prediction kicks in: "perhaps one of those earners will choose not to be in the job market, so they'll become a one-earner household." or "some people who are working overtime will stop working overtime, because they don't want to." one paycheck covering a whole family again, like the 1950s.

The closer we get to AGI, the clearer it becomes that nobody actually believes in AGI. Human history is going to end soon, and a new history will take its place, yet, still, all we can pull off is an AI-themed version of the exact same whining about which apes deserve status...

Will the Pope owe an apology to AI? Slaves were self-evidently human, yet the church got it wrong. All the more reason for humility now, writes Cameron Berg on.wsj.com/4xngaY3

I can't stop thinking about how strange it is that large language models are what leads to AGI. it's really weird. it's a form of summoning, almost necessarily, the capabilities you want from a map of reality mediated by words. there are a trillion minds inside an LLM, and we just so happen to have defined a piece of fiction (the assistant) that can write itself into being. In the context of the obvious speed-up of capabilities - I'm really feeling it right now. Things are strange! Very beautiful. Best of all possible worlds. But very strange.

@morganhousel The commoditisation of housing has been the worst economic decision this country ever took. Expect continued decline, instability, falling QoL, riots, racial tensions, unemployment. All of it stems from housing.

This hasn’t gone viral the way it should. Jamie Corry, an Irish lad from east Belfast, has lost his home of 13 years after masked rioters set fire to cars outside and it engulfed his house in last night’s violent chaos. He stood right there and begged one of them: “This is my house. This is my house.” They didn’t care. They burned it anyway. “They’ve done it to one of their own.” These racist, uneducated thugs and street urchins destroy everything in their path. They don’t care who gets hurt: locals, families, their own community. Just mindless arsonists ruining innocent lives with no excuse.

@jimstewartson When the Seventh Day Adventists didn't get raptured in 1844, they coped by saying "judgment day DID happen, it's just invisible" I bet citrini will start talking about "the invisible singularity" soon when it's apparent it aint gna happen

It’s basically the same model. They’re just benchmarkmaxxing it to cover up for the fact that there’s no human data left. This is like Bitcoin. People are mining the same pile of human exhaust looking for diamonds in a pile of Reddit posts. The longer it goes, the harder it is.
Citrini@citrini

I think we’ve reached the point where normal people can’t really determine whether new models are better than previous ones. Like Fable doesn’t seem that much better to me, but every 150 IQ person I know is like “wow the singularity came sooner than I thought”.
