In about two weeks time, anyone who reads anything beyond Romantasy or cereal packets, will be regarded as fair game: "What're you reading for? You wanna encounter ideas that fall outside this lil list of acceptable opinions we got here?" Progressives squeak, DARVOesque, about "banned literature" and how, in the library of their fantasy, they'd be encouraging Innocent Jr to read all about polyamorous sealions, but ideas they don't understand, humour they don't get and visions that smash the limits of their imaginative acceptability are, in reality, triggers for another round of witch-burning. Martha Nussbam suggests in her 1997 essay, "Democratic Citizenship and the Narrative Imagination" that reading fiction inculcates a "civic imagination" that allows us to sympathetically inhabit the lives of others (without simply collapsing into a fantasy of liberal sameness). She suggests that the novel as a cultural form "coincided with, and supported, the rise of modern democracy." Whatever the illusions of democracy, now crumbling away, the democratic reader is capable of handling and comprehending distance, difference, irony, humour, and can engage in imaginative exercises of great import and strength. The hysteric who doesn't trust the other to read imagines that books are magic spells with a set, terrible outcome, to be prevented at all costs. Illiterates become unaware of their own analphabetism, and all language blurs into a terrifying sea of insignification. Stop the letters!
