After the U.S. Treasury’s official gold revaluation in February 1973 to just $42.22 per ounce, something profound happened.
🔶The free-market price of gold was already trading around $69. Within months, it exploded higher — eventually hitting a high of $195/oz in December 1974.
Why did gold shoot up so dramatically right after the revaluation?
Because the entire world finally realized: $42.22 was the absolute bottom.
The U.S. government had officially declared that value through two devaluations (1971 → $38, then 1973 → $42.22). Once that line in the sand was drawn, smart money understood the dollar was no longer backed by gold in any meaningful way. The Bretton Woods system was dead. Fiat currency era had begun.
That $42.22 revaluation acted as a massive psychological floor. It signaled to central banks, investors, and speculators worldwide that gold would never again be artificially suppressed at those levels.
From there, it was off to the races:
⭕️ Inflation was raging
⭕️ Oil shocks hit
⭕️ Dollar confidence collapsed
Gold went from ~$70 → $195 in under two years. A nearly 180% gain.
But then came the sharp crash — from $195 down to around $100 by August 1976 (a ~50% drop). Why?
Reasons:
⭕️ Profit-taking & correction after the massive 1973-74 speculative bubble
⭕️ U.S. legalized private gold ownership (Jan 1, 1975) — but demand was weak (no strong tradition of gold hoarding in America)
⭕️ Disappointing U.S. investor response — many who bought in anticipation sold instead
⭕️ Easing inflation fears & brief return of confidence in the dollar
⭕️ U.S. Treasury & IMF gold auctions/sales added supply pressure
⭕️ Improved economic outlook as the U.S. emerged from recession
This was a healthy (if painful) consolidation after the first leg of the bull market.
🎯The lesson? When governments revalue gold upward, it’s rarely the top — it’s often the launchpad. Corrections happen, but the long-term trend after leaving the gold standard was powerfully higher.
History shows: once the official price becomes obviously too low, the real price discovery begins.

The Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego and located in the heart of Clairemont, California, was the scene of an active shooter incident today. I passionately denounce the violence that occurred today and do not support any violence against any innocent Americans or human beings anywhere. I have long covered this mosque and am very familiar with its shocking, decades-long track record of terror ties (9/11 hijackers) and extremism. 🔺A 2005 investigation by the Center for Religious Freedom (Freedom House) identified the ICSD as one of only a handful of U.S. mosques found in possession of Saudi government-published “hate ideology” materials, extremist Wahhabi literature filled with calls for intolerance, hatred of non-Muslims, and jihad. 🔺A congressional inquiry into the 9/11 attacks revealed the FBI believed the San Diego mosque was responsible for laundering millions of dollars in cash from Saudi Arabia to the Al Barakat Trading Company and other businesses tied directly to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. 🚨Two of the 9/11 hijackers, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, regularly worshipped at the ICSD before they helped crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. Fellow worshippers assisted them in obtaining Social Security cards, driver’s licenses, purchasing a car, and securing local housing. The pair even accessed funds wired from the nephew of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed through a personal bank account belonging to an ICSD administrator. 🔺Jehad Serwan Mostafa, an American-born San Diegan and now one of the most wanted terrorists in the world, was a regular attendee at the ICSD. He later joined al-Shabaab (al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia), where he rose to senior leadership. Current head Imam Taha Hassane (who has led the mosque since shortly after 9/11) claimed he was “shocked” to learn of Mostafa’s extremism. 🔺Yet just the day after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel, Imam Hassane posted on Instagram (now deleted): “Resistance is the only option for a people under occupation.” In an October 20 sermon he doubled down: “Resistance is justified… resistance when people are occupied becomes a human right.” In December 2023, Taher Herzallah of the Hamas-linked American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) spoke at the ICSD and told the congregation to make Zionists feel “very uncomfortable on campus.” 🚨He explicitly urged them to follow the example of the Gazans on October 7. I condemn the deadly attack on a mosque in San Diego. My thoughts are with those affected.
I know many Muslims in the UK will be shaken by this, worried about their safety when going about their lives and attending mosque, and what it says about the times we’re living in. I understand those fears.
Violence like this does not happen in a vacuum. It grows in an environment where division and anti-Muslim hostility are normalised.
That is intolerable. We must all come together against it.
