And today our local liberal city council member appeared at a no data center press conf The data centers have to build a coalition somehow, but without rural and without the cities , its tough

Big takeaway from this pod: A rural Texas state rep says that data center concerns are the number 1 priority now for his constituents, even higher than taxes! This is really not good for the pro-data center side. Theres no path to a pro-data center Texas without rural Texans.

@data_atx The 3.5% cap _is_ the no tax raise budget. It’s not even keeping up with inflation.

Another great example of why we should have voted for the 'strong mayor' system of government Here the mayor asked for a no tax raise budget, but the city manager seems to have pretty much ignored him and given a max tax raise budget instead.. 🤔
Mayor Kirk Watson@KirkPWatson

Latest #WatsonWire: What's in Your Wallet? Early in the budget process, I asked the City Manager to show us what a budget would look like if we held property taxes at the “No New Revenue” rate—meaning no Maintenance & Operations (M&O) tax increase and keeping the tax revenue to the city at what it was last year. I wanted to have more discipline in budgeting and to daylight the inherent tension in meeting the community’s needs and also keeping Austin’s affordability top of mind. As part of good stewardship, I want Council and the public to see all the options—what services should go on the chopping block, how that affects quality of life, and how it all affects affordability. A No New Revenue rate scenario results in a large and compounding budget shortfall that starts at $26.4 million this year and grows to $122 million by 2030. The Manager’s current proposal doesn’t use the No New Revenue rate. He closes the initial $26.4 million funding shortfall through spending reductions, reallocations, and higher fees and M&O property taxes. He proposes using the “Voter Approval” tax rate. A city can raise property taxes to generate up to 3.5% more revenue than the previous year without an election. The Manager’s proposal would cost the average homeowner $346 more per year than the current tax bill or $29 per month. I want us, as part of our discussions, to look specifically at what would need to be changed or cut if we didn’t go up to the Voter Approval rate. Read more: bit.ly/BudgetWire1

@MrScottHendrix @KirkPWatson We voted on it in 2021 , it lost overwhelmingly 85-15 I think the branding of 'strong' leader in the Trump era isn't the best branding for the austin electorate

@data_atx I’ve been pro-Strong Mayor since Mayor Carole (life-long friend) brought it up in the 90’s. Don’t think it’s made it to a vote (correct me if it has), but we need it. But, @KirkPWatson would be terrible. If ever passed (and that’s a stretch) can’t apply till after an election.

@PhillipMartin yea I think they didn't go through the work of determining what a balanced no-new tax rate budget would look like ( which is what the mayor was requesting )

@PhillipMartin Interesting, I could be wrong, more will become clear at the first budget meeting But I’m pretty sure the mayor asked to see a budget with the cuts needed to make flat taxes work

@data_atx I read this as he ran it, came up with the $26M shortfall, growing to $120M later And w/ the goal of closing this "shortfall," they did that mix of cuts and prop tax increase to close the "shortfall" Not defending the practice (or wording), just how I read it...

@data_atx We couldn’t, it came up when Mayor Adler was dog walked by Greg Casar. That would have been an even bigger disaster than that whole time was.

WOW so many people are calling in to speak out against project connect spending that Austin Transit Partnership's voicemail box overflowed Thanks to all those going tomorrow to speak up! This is what democracy looks like 👏
Jeffery Bowen@Bowen4Austin

Just called @ATP_org at provided phone number (512) 710-2100 from their website #public-comment-opportunities" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">atptx.org/contact/#publi… to sign up to speak tomorrow. The call went to voice mail. Be advised the MAILBOX IS FULL. Will signup by email to speak. Prefer speaking in person. Call it a Jeff thing. Let's see how this is going to work. One would think at the amount of taxes paid to ATP, someone would be answering the phone to sign up speakers. Just a thought.

Construction robots are so Austin coded. Another big round for the ecosystem. Congrats @noah_schochet & the entire @TerraFirma_Inc team
Noah Schochet@noah_schochet

Today, we’re announcing that we’ve raised $115 million in funding, including a $100M Series A led by @kleinerperkins. America has lost the ability to build, and we’re here to restore it. My co-founder, @NoahMcGuinn, and I left our jobs at @SpaceX , where we worked on programs including Starship, Starshield, and @Starlink, to build a company that will solve construction’s greatest challenges. Infrastructure is the foundation of civilization, and construction is the precursor to innovation. If America wants to build a brighter future for the next generation, we have to make it faster, cheaper, and safer to build. That’s where @TerraFirma_Inc comes in. We’re a new type of company, a robotic construction company that builds the full technology stack needed to deliver an order-of-magnitude improvement in one of the world’s oldest, largest, most important, but least efficient industries. We are building technology that expands what’s possible in construction on Earth, and then we'll use that same technology to build megastructures and colonies on the Moon and Mars. We’ve made tremendous progress over the past year, growing the company more than 10x in the last 12 months. We are performing projects across the world. By the end of October 2026, we are on track to operate 3 of the top 3 largest robotic construction fleets in the world, each on a different continent, bringing unprecedented speed, scale, and efficiency to some of the world’s most complex critical infrastructure projects. This funding will allow us to step on the gas and scale our manufacturing, software, operations, and construction deployments, including work on massive commercial and government contracts. We’re building the future of construction right here in Austin, Texas, and scaling it globally. If you want to be part of the team changing the world, now and on Mars, join us. Our Series A was led by Kleiner Perkins, with participation from Bain Capital Ventures, Glade Brook Capital Partners, BANNER VC, Saga Ventures, Trust Ventures, Definition, PEAK6, Magnetar Capital, and Ravelin Capital. Huge thanks to all of our angel investors, friends, and family who have helped and supported us throughout this journey. Apply here: jobs.ashbyhq.com/TerraFirma-Inc…

Instead of just explaining why Austin's new train cars are almost 3 times more expensive than other cities ATP tells CBS that the board wont talk to the press before the vote, and that you can talk to them after. (very we have to pass the bill to find out whats in it vibes 😂)

@chiproytx @elonmusk yessir , also roll it out to Texas cities! will be much easier to have permanent affect because there arent the same legal challenges as with feds re: different branches of government And the property taxpayers will see the effects immediately!

DOGE and @elonmusk were over the target. The Swamp’s reaction proved it. The wealthiest counties in America surround D.C., yet they produce little of tangible value. They thrive by milking taxpayer dollars. Make DOGE Permanent.

Wow! Banger new article from CBS about the exact same light rail cost issue I posted about earlier. They have a light rail expert also raising concerns, saying it "might be the most expensive light rail car order I've ever seen"

As the Austin Transit Partnership board prepares to meet this upcoming Wednesday, questions are being raised about the cost of a proposed contract tied to the Austin Light Rail Project. cbsaustin.com/news/local/nyu…

@santobrah @data_atx There are two contracts. The first is related to an already existing contract. That’s the one on the agenda. This one is to do more outreach in the Oltorf/35 area to help get more people off the streets and into housing. /1

Weird thing with the new Sunrise Homeless navigation center contract It seems to be proposed by the homeless strategy office as an extension to an RFP that Sunrise won in 2022.. There was an RFP in 2026 to operate the new navigation center, David Gray recently said Sunrise won it, but its not being mentioned in the city council agenda.. Did anyone else even apply to the 2026 one? Usually when theres a new RFP they share the scoring matrix of all the bids as part of going to city council. Very strange. There were mixed messages last year about whether the new navigation center would be competitively bid or not. And now its kind of unclear if it was.

@data_atx I should also add that a Siemens alternative would still look like a comical (but lower) number compared to system expansions in cities that aren’t starting from scratch or have such…extensive requirements like ours.

At the Austin Transit Partnership board meeting this week they will vote on locking in the pricing on the first 21 light rail vehicles. Total Cost = $352 million ( $16.7 million per vehicle ) Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, the wording is a little unclear, but I think these would be by far the most expensive light rail vehicles ever. Most cities pay like 5-10 million...
