People are suggesting that if the courts decide in Rigathi Gachagua’s favor regarding the impeachment matter, then maybe he should try for the presidency. Fair enough. In a democracy, nobody can refuse him that constitutional right. But marketing Gachagua to Kenyans as a presidential choice is like offering pork to Muslims. The demand simply does not exist outside a limited political circle. My greatest concern is not even his politics. It is his temperament. The man is too harsh, too aggressive, too proud, and too filled with ego to be trusted anywhere close to State House. Leadership at the highest level requires restraint, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and the ability to unite people with different views. Gachagua displays the complete opposite. If anything, he creates the image of a leader who could easily develop into one of the strictest authoritarian figures this country has ever known. The way he handled protests while in office already gave Kenyans a worrying preview into what a Gachagua presidency might resemble: intolerance, confrontation, and “mambo ni matatu” governance on steroids. And that is the scary part. He could very well make William Ruto look moderate. I have no issue with him taking on the role of kingmaker, a role he performs exceptionally well. His energy and consistency in helping Kenyans dismantle William Ruto’s propaganda and carefully crafted narratives is admirable. But being a brilliant political mobiliser and narrative disruptor does not automatically translate into presidential temperament. Some leaders are better suited shaping history from the engine room than sitting at the wheel itself. This is nothing personal against Rigathi Gachagua. In fact, I can comfortably support a political formation where he plays a supporting role behind figures like Edwin W. Sifuna or Kalonzo Musyoka. But Gachagua himself on the ballot for president?

When the British army molested, killed, and maltreated Kenyan women while destroying several hectares of land during training, Ruto did nothing. When the French wanted a foothold in Kenya through a five-year renewable partnership covering maritime security and intelligence sharing, he gave them the go-ahead and immunity from Kenyan law, all under the pretense of military cooperation. Ruto is a Western puppet who is not after the interests of the people but those of his masters and his own selfish interests. With time, many Kenyans will realize this.
