What I failed to adequately convey was this: assessing what happened in Amsterdam without accounting for the actions and history of the Maccabi ultras - which authorities saw coming - is incomplete. And again, that's not justifying violence, or antisemitism, here or anywhere.

I should expand. To call it *only* antisemitism misses vital context; of course there was antisemitism involved, and that is poorly imprecise from me. But how can you ignore the incitement from Maccabi ultras? This report seems to play it down the middle. x.com/Channel4News/s…

Israeli football fans chased and beaten up in Amsterdam in what the Dutch prime minister has called ‘an anti-Semitic attack’. It followed earlier anti-Arab chanting and violence by some Israeli fans. Here’s what we know.

Genocidal intent: Israel's new defense minister, Israel Katz, said on 13 October 2023: “The civilian population in [G]aza is ordered to leave immediately. We will win. They will not receive a drop of water or a single battery until they leave the world.” icj-cij.org/sites/default/…

Wow. Danielle Smith government sacks entire board of its $160billion fund manager. This is the 3rd time time they've dissolved an entire board, after Alberta Health Services and Banff Centre.

1/ This might be the most dishonest use of a 5-point likert scale I have ever seen. Holy shit this is bad. Don't know if it s @robertbenzie's interpretation or @DavidColetto's but it should be punishable by incarceration.

3/ This is pretty balanced. 25% pro, 28% against, 30% kind of in the middle. But in the hands of Benzie/Colletto (not sure which), the "3" in the likert scale becomes "pro-torching the bike lanes". hence - 55% are pro. THIS IS NOT THE WAY LIKERT WORKS.

Lansdowne 2.0 would bulldoze this space and kill a ton of trees (pictured) that have “done too well” and remove 58,000 square feet of greenspace to build a taxpayer funded new arena. The current arena was slated to last decades longer with proper maintenance. #Ottnews #Ottcity

This is ALARMING. Mayors are asking the Premier to override the right to life and to security of the person of homeless persons. These, along with the the right to housing, are cornerstone human rights upon which all other rights stem. That's what's at stake here. They want to be able to disappear homeless people. And a reminder, Grants Pass is a SCOTUS decision and is irrelevant to Canada - a decision made by Trump appointed Judges. I've been to encampments across the United States, I've met with mayors and city counselors across the United States. I've never seen such cruelty toward homeless people as I saw there. Is this the direction this country wants to move in ?
Diana Chan McNally@DianaCMcNally

12 Ontario Mayors are formally requesting that @fordnation invoke the notwithstanding clause to suspend encampment residents' Charter-protected rights so that they can be removed from encampments. The letter cites the Grants Pass Supreme Court decision in the U.S., which allows local governments to criminalize unhoused people in lieu of building housing and shelter, or offering services. It's Draconian and represents an abdication of government responsibility for the welfare of homeless people. This letter comes a day after @fordnation told @ONBigCityMayors to "have the backbone" to formally ask him to use the notwithstanding clause. Ford has invoked the clause three times, twice successfully to both force back-to-work legislation and to limit criticism of his government through third-party advertising. With the Mayors of Barrie, Brampton, Brantford, Cambridge, Chatham-Kent, Clarington, Oakville, Oshawa, Pickering, St. Catherines, Sudbury, and Windsor taking responsibility for the ask, Ford could very well table legislation that invokes the notwithstanding clause to evict encampments, without municipalities needing to offer resources like shelter. Even if you don't care about homeless people, you should be greatly alarmed that entire demographic groups are being targeted to have their Charter rights removed. Who's next?
