I really do hope this tech gets revived in the future. I imagine Google, with their wealth of user-submitted contributions to places on Maps and across the internet, could create some amazingly immersive experiences for browsers or even VR.

In a fit of nostalgia today, I came across @dddexperiments's article (@dddexperiments/why-i-preserved-photosynth-2f670d5c8dec" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@dddexperiment…) on his work to create and preserve Photosynth. Definitely worth a read (and there's a synth of Notre Dame before the fire to make it worthwhile).

Who remembers Microsoft's Photosynth? It's a shame this technology was retired, because the potential it held was incredible. Imagine navigating through a 3D space built from tens of thousands of similarly tagged images across the internet.
