New paper🚨📢 A simple way to help #pollinators in sub- & urban building complexes... We recommend that lawns are mown at an interval of at least 6, but ideally 12, weeks to increase floral resources & pollinator abundance Work complete with @Safeguard2021 @RHULBioSci @MoJGovUK
Conservation Evidence Journal@ConservEvidJour

Study bit.ly/40pjJOV from @Safeguard2021 shows reduced lawn mowing frequencies of between 6-12 weeks increases pollinator abundance by 170%. Using UK MoJ prison sites to look at how lawns in urban and sub-urban building complexes can be managed for pollinator abundance

@StevenFalk1 @Safeguard2021 @RHULBioSci @MoJGovUK Definitely just one piece of the puzzle. The final recommendation includes combining this with rotational mowing to keep floral resources and short sward. The dream study would combine mowing frequencies, mosaic mowing, and presence of the nest/larval dev sites 🐝🦋

@morgsmorrison73 @Safeguard2021 @RHULBioSci @MoJGovUK Definitely, if you want to encourage foraging but just remember that ground-nesting bees often require a short tug with sun-warmed earth for nesting esp on S-facing slopes - so let’s factor those in too 👍

The data entry dream team (me and Mum) are back at work entering this year's citizen science data. Today's highlight was the joy a single flower counted brought (after 11 weeks of a very empty lawn) 🌼😊 #optimow #citizenscience #pollinators

The first 30 booklets to be returned from my citizen science study were delivered today. Very excited to see what this year's results show and a massive appreciation for the citizen scientist who have contributed to the project 🐝🪲🦋

I'm home for a day so time to spend too long staring at my parents lawn and pointing out the pollinators ... 5 solitary spp, 2 bumble spp, HBs, 4 hoverflies spp, 1 butterly and many flies spp Excited to see the pollinator diversity my Optimow participants have on their lawns
