The P & E not withstanding, a slightly more sophsticated model is too look at it in the context of interest rates. The shifting median PE is perhaps an outcome of low interest rates.

Yes, markets are expensive. P/E 24.4 vs median 22.1. Does knowing that help? Barely. 26 years of Nifty 500: starting P/E has almost no relationship with next year's return. 2007 and 2011 started at similar valuations around 20x. One returned +63%, the other -25%. The P is today. The E is yesterday. Returns are made by tomorrow's E, which isn't in the ratio.

Reading this now .. on recommendation in one of @safiranand tweets .. I’m hooked on from the line where they state that it’s not “what to buy” that’s matters as much as “how much to buy” .. most of my mistakes were also position sizing on bets that went wrong and costed me decades of savings to crawl out of the hole I dug for myself .. and hence can resonate with the premise of the book ..
