@object_stream If this website is going to be free, why is there a json mentioning ad-related subscription tiers? It seems like there is a plan to profit from other creators' work. Also, is there a reason OpenAI is listed in the privacy policy as a third party service?

Object Stream Community@object_stream·
Heyyy everyonee! It's Dan here, the founder and developer behind Object Stream Community, jumping onto our official account for a moment to talk to you all a little more personally ^^ First of all, me and the entire team genuinely can't thank you enough for all the support you've been giving us, we truly never expected this to blow up the way it has, and in such a tiny amount of time too, in just about 7 hours it had already made this much noise, and honestly we don't even know how to properly show you all how happy and excited we are right now, so much so that it's currently 6am in the morning for me and I've been lying here trying to sleep and not look at everything that's been pouring in since around 1am, because realistically I really should be resting, but that's actually exactly how, still scrolling at this hour, I ended up bumping into some of the not so nice stuff too, a few people calling it a stupid idea, some thinking that we're somehow trying to replace YouTube, and then the one I've now seen repeated the most, people saying the whole thing is vibecoded, so I'd really love to gently clear a couple of these up, because they honestly do mean a lot to me ^^ so first, on the idea that we're trying to replace YouTube, that couldn't really be further from what this actually is, and just like it already says on our Kickstarter pre-launch page, everything on the platform plays through YouTube's official embedded player, we don't host or re-upload a single video ourselves, every episode runs straight through YouTube exactly as it normally would and always links right back to the original creator's channel, and we built it this way completely on purpose, because it means the creators keep every bit of their views, their ad revenue and their credit, nothing is ever taken away from them, so we're really not here to compete with YouTube or be some alternative to it, all we're doing is giving people one organized place to discover and keep track of Object Shows while always sending them right back to the people who actually make them, and then the other big one, the whole vibecoded thing, meaning people thinking the site was just fully thrown together by an AI, and I promise there's a real reason behind me saying it really wasn't, and it's not only because computer science is something I truly care about, even though it really is, I go to an ITIS (which is a CS-focused school in italy), I'm in my fourth year now, and I've been programming for pretty much my whole life starting with blockly and ending up with javascript, c++, sql, python, rust, etc..., but that's honestly the smaller part of the story, the bigger reason is that a project with an architecture like this one is simply far too complex to ever be built entirely by an AI, and if I were really vibecoding the whole thing, I probably wouldn't have even been able to put together a secure maintenance page, let alone everything actually running quietly under the hood, like a content moderation system split across four different layers, where one of them runs its own machine learning models directly on the server and lives in a separate process that recycles itself on purpose so it doesn't slowly leak memory and bring everything down, or the backend running across multiple worker processes at once where the caches have to stay perfectly in sync in real time so the moment something changes it changes everywhere instantly, and the thing is, all of that is stuff you already have to genuinely understand yourself just to even be able to ask an AI to build it in the first place, and if you don't know it, the AI won't get it right either, so the whole thing just quietly falls apart, which is exactly why vibecoding doesn't really hold up nowadays, and I'll be real with you, I'm one of the first people to be against it, that said, I really don't want to pretend that I never used AI at all, because being the only developer behind this entire site, trying to do everything on my own is so incredibly hard, and there were so many moments where I leaned on it to explain a concept to me, or to hand me a little snippet or some advice, or to help me find a new approach whenever I got stuck on a bug I just couldn't crack by myself, and I used all of that to slowly keep improving the platform and making it sturdier and sturdier over time, but that's a tool helping me build something, never something building it for me :) and on top of all of that, I wouldn't even have the money to pay for enough AI to somehow vibecode a platform this big, only to then watch it come crashing down two days after launch, since today's coding agents really have no clue what optimization or scalability even are lol, I actually had to load test the site under simulated heavy traffic and rebuild parts of it myself when the heavier stuff started eating memory and falling over, which is exactly the kind of work an AI just won't do for you, and one last little thing, I completely understand that the maintenance page, the way it looks right now, might give off that "made by AI" feeling, and I'll admit, UI/UX really isn't my strongest suit, so for a few of the layouts I took a bit of inspiration from other sites, or used snippets that were, well, what they were, and then did my very best to tweak them into something a little nicer and with some personality of its own, so I'm really sorry if I didn't quite manage to pull it off in the end :c anyway, I just really wanted to be open with you all about this, and I promise we're only going to keep improving from here, we'll keep you updated on everything as we go, answering your questions, and slowly giving you more info and more content little by little, so please bear with us, and thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for all the love, it honestly means the world to us ^^ -Dan <3

Heyyyy no worries, it's a fair thing to be curious about, so the pricing page and the subscription stuff are already in the site simply because they're a real part of how the platform works, so we built them in from the start rather than bolting them on later, but to be clear, watching is, and always will be, completely free, nobody ever has to pay a cent to use it, the optional subscriptions are just a way for people who want to to support the project and cover its ongoing running costs down the line, so the servers and the upkeep and everything that keeps it alive after launch, and the small ads work the same way, they're only there to keep everything on, none of it profits off the creators since every episode plays through YouTube's official player and they keep all their own views, revenue and credit, so it's all there on purpose and fully working, just optional, and we'll be breaking every bit of it down in detail in the explanations we've got coming, so nothing stays unclear ^^ -Dan <3

@object_stream I love everything from your response, I hope people can come across it and understand the struggle, but I wanted to also try to understand why there was a pricing page and stuff related to subscriptions in the site itself? I’m not mad or trying to accuse but I’m somewhat curious

a Discord server is already in the works, but the only thing is we won't be opening it right now, and the reason is things are already blowing up faster than our team can really keep up with just here on socials, and a direct chat where everyone would understandably be expecting answers to their questions would be completely impossible for us to handle right now, so for the moment we'd rather keep things as calm and manageable as we can, at least until we've given the project the full transparency it deserves, with proper announcements and the transparency documents I'm currently working on, and once all of that is out and things have settled a bit, opening the Discord will make a lot more sense and we'll actually be able to give it the attention it needs :) -Dan <3

Heyyy, it's Dan again.. ^^ I want to be really honest with you all, I genuinely don't have any problem being transparent, I never have, and I'll gladly explain every single part of this project, how it works, where the money goes, all of it, but I wasn't planning on laying it all out right here on X like this, piece by piece, in scattered replies at random hours, we actually had proper announcements, explanations, new videos and a lot more already planned to show all of this the right way, and right now I'm basically being pushed into explaining everything way earlier and way messier than we ever wanted, just because of how much distrust and how many assumptions are getting thrown at us before we've even had the chance to say a word ourselves, and I really do understand being cautious, a bit of healthy skepticism is completely fair, but please keep in mind that behind all of this is a tiny team, doing our absolute best with what we have, and trying to answer every single thing around the clock while also actually building the platform isn't something we can realistically keep up with, so all I'm asking is for a little bit of time and a little bit of patience, please give us the chance to explain things properly and officially, in full, with the videos and the posts and the proper breakdowns we've been preparing, instead of having to defend every tiny detail in random replies before any of it is even ready, I promise we're not hiding anything, everything will be explained, clearly and completely, we just need a little room to actually do it right, thank you for understanding, and for sticking with us through all of this, it really means a lot to us :) -Dan <3

The point is that a playlist really only helps if you already know the exact show you're after, and even then it's just that one show from that one channel, but Object Shows are scattered across dozens and dozens of separate creators and channels, so this brings the whole genre together into one organized place, where you can actually discover shows you'd never have thought to search for, filter through all of it by genre, year, language and more, keep personal watchlists that track your progress across every show and let you pick back up right where you left off, leave reviews, and request new ones through a built in system, none of which a single YouTube playlist does, and on the vibecoded thing, I'm really not staying silent on it, I already made a whole post explaining it in full, it's right here on the account if you wanna give it a read ^^ -Dan <3

Yeah, definitely more shows! ^^ the catalog is meant to keep growing over time, theres a request system built right into the platform where anyone can suggest new shows to be added and vote on the ones they wanna see, so the lineup keeps growing together with the community and you can absolutely request your own show too, creators are more than welcome to, the only thing to keep in mind is that it needs to be on YouTube, since everything plays through YouTube's official player and always links right back to the creator :) -Dan <3

You're right that embedding YouTube content itself basically costs nothing, and you're right that this legally isn't a streaming service with show licenses to pay for, we never pay a cent for any of that, so none of the money goes toward embedding or licensing, that part is free and always will be, the 21500 is the ideal goal, not the minimum, the actual minimum sits closer to 12500, and what it covers is everything around running this properly and legally, so legal and privacy compliance (a real privacy policy and terms, a GDPR review, all of it, since we handle accounts and people's personal data), an independent security audit from an external company, and servers that can actually hold up for a public launch instead of falling over the second everyone shows up, and this is where me being Italian actually comes into play, because to legally run something like this and take any money at all (the subscriptions, the campaign itself) I have to open and keep up a proper registered business here in Italy, which drags in a whole pile of mandatory costs that have nothing to do with the code, a VAT number, compulsory INPS pension contributions that run a few thousand euros a year even at the bare minimum, an accountant, chamber of commerce registration, and taxes on top, none of it optional, it's just what it costs to do this by the book, and the optional subscriptions are a separate thing from the campaign, they're completely optional, nobody ever has to pay and watching always stays free, they're only there to help support the site and cover its ongoing running costs down the line, so the servers, the upkeep, everything that keeps it alive after launch, we've already got the entire budget plan written out and approved by Kickstarter, and we'll be breaking all of it down in detail further on so everyone can see exactly where every single euro goes. -Dan <3

@object_stream @thebarfyshow Dan, why do you need 21500€ for this? In no way is it required for embedding YouTube content nor do I see how you being Italian comes into play, this legally isn’t a streaming service, you don’t need to pay for show licenses And I’m saying this as an Italian too, I’m confused.

starting with the money side, watching is, and always will be, completely free, you're never going to pay a single cent just to watch something, the optional support tiers and the small, non-intrusive ads are only there to cover the platform's actual running costs, so things like the servers, the legal and privacy compliance, the security audit, all the boring but necessary stuff going on behind the scenes, this was never built to make a profit, and anything that ever comes in beyond covering those real costs just goes right back into making the platform better, and none of it takes anything away from the creators either, since every episode plays through YouTube's official player, the creators keep 100% of their own views, their ad revenue and their credit, exactly the same as they would on YouTube itself, nothing is ever pulled away from them, our running costs are ours to cover, on our end, never out of the creators' pockets :) as for OpenAI showing up in the privacy policy, it's listed because it can be used as the optional last layer of our content moderation (so the free omni-moderation model), and only for the borderline cases the earlier layers can't quite decide on by themselves, most of the moderation actually runs locally, on our own server (with a local AI model), specifically to keep people's data private, and even that last layer is toggleable on top of it, we chose to list every single third party that could ever come anywhere near any data, including the optional ones and even the ones that aren't active yet, because we'd rather over-explain than hide anything from you, no personal data is ever sold, it's only content being checked to keep the platform safe.

@object_stream One question relating to LLM usage: Will it be used to localize any text on the website? I was concerned about seeing some parts of the code that looked to be using third-party tools that rely on AI for localization and wasn't sure on if it's currently in use.
