An all‑white jury has now been seated in the Karmelo Anthony trial. Twelve jurors, not a single Black member. Karmelo Anthony was 17 years old when he fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas in April 2025. He is now 19 and standing trial as an adult, facing first‑degree murder charges. Karmelo has maintained from the beginning that he acted in self‑defense after being grabbed and threatened. The prosecution struck all qualified Black jurors from the panel. The defense filed a Batson challenge citing racial discrimination in the jury selection process. Tomorrow morning, I will stand before this panel and deliver opening statements on Karmelo’s behalf.

Smokers have lower risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes--the evidence: EPICOVID19 (Italy) — 6,857 individuals with known PCR results. Current smokers had nearly half the odds of testing positive (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.45–0.65), with a clear dose-response: mild smokers OR 0.76, moderate 0.56, heavy 0.38. They also had lower odds of asymptomatic, mild, and severe infection. Northern/Central California Health System — Another large EHR-based study: current smokers had adjusted OR of 0.69 (95% CI 0.66–0.73) for testing positive. Notably, they flagged that missing smoking status (25.7% of the sample) was concentrated among vulnerable populations with higher actual smoking rates — meaning the protective effect was likely underestimated. Swedish Population Study — Nationwide data from both pandemic waves. Current smokers had RR 0.78 (95% CI 0.75–0.81) for COVID-19 diagnosis and RR 0.66 (0.55–0.80) for hospitalization. The two-wave consistency (despite completely different testing strategies between waves) makes selection bias from differential testing behavior an unlikely explanation. Living Bayesian Meta-Analysis (Version 7) — 233 studies, 32 good/fair quality included in meta-analyses. Current smokers had RR 0.74 (95% CrI 0.58–0.93) for infection compared to never-smokers. The Bayesian approach is important here because it properly handles the heterogeneity across studies rather than just slapping fixed-effects models on a mixed bag of data.
