Some maps shared by the media and government about flood-prone areas are too broad to be useful on the ground. Labeling an entire neighborhood like Parklands as “at risk” doesn’t help much compared to identifying specific streets or low-lying sections. It would be far more helpful if Nairobi County published location-level data. We’ve included waterways mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, covering rivers, streams, drains, and canals. It’s far from perfect, but it provides a general picture of the city’s drainage network. For example, sections of First Parklands Avenue are known to experience flooding due to a nearby drain or canal that passes through the area. This kind of street-level detail is what would make official flood mapping far more useful.

What happened here? Several parts of the building don’t seem to line up, even by just looking at it. The areas circled in red show the same feature repeated on every floor, but the shapes and proportions change from one level to another. It’s not clear whether this was intentional or something went wrong during construction.

For visual reference, the green area shows where the parking lot is, the blue area marks the former location of Ukay Center, and the pink line indicates a drain that carries water from the river on the opposite side of Peponi Road.

Governor @JohnsonSakaja today led a multi-agency team in demolishing an illegal car park along River Kibagare near Westgate Mall. He reiterated that no compensation will be issued for illegal encroachments, urging occupants along riparian land to vacate ahead of ongoing works.

It’s been linked to alleged land-grabbing. According to the Ndung’u Report, LR No. 209/5581 was originally reserved as a “State House Children’s Playground,” though records suggest it was later allocated to private parties. On 25 Nov 2021, the Environment & Land Court ruled on the dispute, with the government (via EACC) asserting it is public land. Ownership was not decided, and the status quo was ordered maintained. Maybe something changed recently.

This land next to Vienna Court, previously held by @ForeignOfficeKE, has seen a sudden ownership transfer. New owners swiftly removed long-established trees and shrubs. The rains underscore vegetation's vital role in mitigating environmental risks and preserving eco-balance

If you are planning to buy a plot in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, or Kajiado, this is a good time to visit the area and determine whether it lies on reclaimed wetland or along a long-forgotten riverway. The rains are here to guide you.

@CarolineThee Ancestral land means a lot culturally. More power to you if you can keep it. But many sell when cash is needed and options are limited.

@MjengoHub We hope no one was seriously hurt. That’s Kanjata Road, though it eventually merges into Muthangari Drive. There’s a very steep hill there and a sharp corner, so drivers really need to take extra care at that spot.

🏗 A new 4,096-unit affordable housing project will be coming up in Starehe. And interestingly, it’s planned for the plot right next to Starehe Boys’ Centre on the former government housing estate (L.R. 209/20158 & 209/20159).

Another perspective. The image from Kimathi Lane shows the plot of land on the left with mabati fencing, taken when it was getting excavated. The Nation Centre is visible on the right. The other image is a satellite view of the same plot, showing the base with construction progress since then. Uncoordinated, beacon-to-beacon development across neighbouring residential parcels has been an issue. In business districts, it’s not ideal, but it’s largely the norm.
