@TheRedGoner i felt this way about signalis, implementing tank controls to be able to point and say 'Hey remember this?' without making them a cohesive part of gameplay. the moment i turned them off i realised just how much of an afterthought it was, disappointing

I feel like this really exemplifies the problem. Modern game designers, even when aping the aesthetic or brandishing the names of classic titles, fundamentally do not respect retro game design. That contradiction makes it all the more annoying.

In this video Nerrel interviews some random indie devs about their early-3D style platformer and they start talking about not being able to turn in midair in Mario 64 as a problem that they wanted to avoid in their game and if they made it like that now then no one would play it

@UnitatosWorld re1 released in japan with auto aim, auto aim was removed in localisation as an attempt to curb rentals and encourage actually purchasing the game, fwiw. not disagreeing with you but more context 👍

@Galvarune @WhiteQueenNV @RobinPoedev Choice based mechanics with Barry and Rebecca were mostly cut to be more linear, similarly exploration was made more linear as well. REmake added auto aim (I think the directors cut actually added this first). Those were what I noticed on the first playthrough.

to me this video feels dated. like what my opinion was 5 years ago. calls RE2 remake "not the original experience" but says the GC RE1 remake is just a better version of the original even though they are entirely different tonally. even playing on veteran expectations
