And the final hurdle it all has to come to is the question of why the story would be presented in a way where the player is meant to believe Carol might be the Knight. Did this apparent subversion of expectations serve a purpose, other than making people argue on the internet?

This is why, despite logic and evidence pointing to the contrary, many theories about Dess Knight attempt to explain away the agency and knowledge of Dess and Carol. If the theories are correct we don't have the answers to these questions, and no one can even imagine an answer.

Dess Knight's biggest advantage is uncertainty allowing explanation of logistics. Is she an amalgamate, or a titan, or possessed? If she's in her right mind and acting with agency, does she hold some flawed perspective like Flowey, or was she "not the greatest person" like Chara?

And for some reason people say Scholar of the First Sin is worse? But some of the points where it was the most obtuse or extreme were toned down. They made Devotee Scarlett constantly point at the windmill.

You might even say this is a point where Dark Souls 2, particularly Scholar of the First Sin, strays from the "spirit" of those games. It feels like more encounters are made to be countered with basic logic established in tutorials or with knowledge provided elsewhere.

Despite the three being overall quite similar, I don't think it's impossible or unreasonable to form a scathing critique of Dark Souls 2 from the perspective of someone who prefers Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. It's just that most who tried have sounded disconnected from reality

@junta_enjoyer @ezequiel51_ And, if anything, the common sentiment of those who dislike Dark Souls 2 matches up far more with Mauler than with matthewmatosis, who did say he liked the game. For whatever that's worth in the appraisal of his takes on it.

@junta_enjoyer @ezequiel51_ I think it's obvious that Dark Souls 2 would always be the prime candidate for that. Not just for the few differences in its design choices but also in the surrounding context that people could latch onto even if those things had no explicit bearing on those design choices.
