“Late Tuesday afternoon….Trump administration announced the most devastating attack on the U.S. Forest Service in the agency’s 121-year history. Not a budget cut. Not a policy shift. Not a “reorganization.” An execution. They’re ripping the headquarters out of Washington and shipping it to Salt Lake City, Utah — the beating heart of the anti-public-lands movement in America. They’re shuttering every single one of the ten regional offices that have governed this agency since Gifford Pinchot built the system over a century ago — and with them, the career professionals who spent entire lifetimes earning the expertise and the authority to push back when politicians came calling with bad ideas and worse motives. They’re destroying more than fifty research facilities across thirty-one states, labs that house decades of irreplaceable long-term science, the kind you literally cannot restart once it’s gone. And they’re replacing all of it — the offices, the scientists, the institutional knowledge, the professional independence — with fifteen political appointees called “state directors,” embedded in state capitals alongside the very governors, legislators, and industry lobbyists who have spent their careers demanding that the Forest Service log more, protect less, and get out of the way. One hundred and ninety-three million acres of your national forests. An area larger than Texas. The largest public land agency in the country. Just handed, on a silver platter, to the people who’ve spent their entire careers trying to destroy it.” hatchmag.com/articles/trump…

Mayor Mamdani is at the red panda exhibit at the Prospect Park Zoo to announce a settlement against food delivery app HungryPanda. “They are very hungry pandas, unlike the HungryPanda app, they, however, are not interested in bamboozling hard working New Yorkers,” Mamdani says

The ICE warehouse spending spree may be padding the accounts of big financial institutions, all at your expense. New data shows DHS paying investment firm Blue Owl Capital $119 million for a warehouse, 2x the market value. And at least 33 members of the Trump administration invest in Blue Owl’s various private equity funds. In another case, Goldman Sachs sold a New Jersey facility to ICE for $129.3 million — 137% over value. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I sympathize with the sentiment but must make a crucial distinction. "AI" is not coming for us, the AI firms and their c-suite executives, as well as the managerial class buying their products as leverage over labor—*they're* the ones "coming for us."
Daniel Aldana Cohen@aldatweets

AI is coming for us—and it's coming hardest for the working class. Without radical changes to our political economy, what's left of our democracy will wither. The time for "moderate" reforms is over. @jennifermharris nails it

I finally discovered why they are doing this! The new Kindle devices have ads in them, which you have to pay extra to remove them. I’m assuming they couldn’t put ads on the old Kindles. Sooner or later the ads will play every other page! We live in corporate hell now!
Hugo Guerra @FMX_Conference@HugoCGuerra

A Kindle is probably one of the most low-tech devices ever made, so why is @AmazonUK discontinuing support for Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation? Why are they forcing new stuff without reason? A KINDLE IS A TEXT DEVICE! There is no need for updates. Text is text! #amazon #kindle

One expert analysis I saw calculated that if Iran charges a $2mm per ship toll, and Hormuz transits return to average levels, it would earn Iran up to $71B annually. Even just a toll on oil/gas earns $21B, which is 3x Iran's current defense budget. This is a huge win for Iran.
Jonathan Karl@jonkarl

This morning, I asked President Trump if he’s okay with the Iranians charging a toll for all ships that go through the Strait of Hormuz, he told me there may be a Joint US-Iran venture to charge tolls: “We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It’s a way of securing it — also securing it from lots of other people.” “It’s a beautiful thing”

Why is a private citizen who has financial ties in the billions with Israel and Saudi Arabia negotiating for the United States? Why are no diplomats involved? When will the Republican Congress act like an actual coequal branch of government and not a doormat?

The left has not always covered itself in glory on free speech, but Brendan Carr’s repeated explicit efforts to use the FCC to censor television news is so far beyond anything else that’s happened in recent American life.
Brendan Carr@BrendanCarrFCC

More outrageous conduct from CNN. Fake news is bad enough for the country, but pushing out a hoax headline in such a sensitive national security moment as this requires accountability. Iran put out an official statement that simply cannot be squared with the one CNN's false headline attributes to them. Time for change at CNN.

The routing of the Hutchinson probe through the Civil Rights Division is the tell. A lying-to-Congress allegation goes through the Criminal Division. Routing it through the Civil Rights Division - the specialized unit that handles police misconduct and systemic racial discrimination - bypasses the normal prosecutorial gatekeepers who would evaluate whether a viable case exists. The NYT reports that even within DOJ, officials have questioned from the start whether there’s a workable criminal case. The probe was opened anyway, while Bondi was fighting for her job. This is the same pattern that’s been documented across this administration’s retribution efforts. James Comey indicted. Letitia James indicted. John Brennan under stepped-up investigation. Adam Schiff under investigation. None of those cases have succeeded cleanly - courts have blocked them, grand juries have refused indictments, procedural mistakes have derailed prosecutions. But every one of them sent a signal to anyone currently inside the government watching what’s happening. Todd Blanche is now acting AG. His first public statement said DOJ is not focused on Trump’s enemies. He made that statement while NBC confirmed the department is also weighing the Hutchinson investigation going forward under his tenure. The investigation doesn’t have to produce a conviction to accomplish its purpose. Anyone sitting inside any administration, in any agency, watching what happens to people who testified truthfully about what they witnessed already understands what the stakes are.

Breaking NYT: The Trump Justice Department is investigating Cassidy Hutchison, the star witness against Trump during the Jan. 6 Committee hearings. Pam Bondi opened the probe as she was trying to shore up her shaky standing. Some DOJ officials have questioned whether there's even a viable case against Hutchison. nytimes.com/2026/04/07/nyr…
