“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.” ― Toni Morrison

Biggest "the kids are fucked" moment I've had recently was buying a car Walked into the dealership, told them what I wanted and said I'd pay up-front. Expected them to be thrilled Instead they were horrified. Spent the next 20 minutes trying to get me to finance it at some absurd rate Got me curious so after I left I read about car sale profit models. Apparently most US dealerships make more financing now than from the cars themselves I was such a boomer I assumed they'd want CASH In reality they want your ETERNAL SLAVERY at 19% APR

I started my original Twitter account in 2009 to talk about football. I only tweeted about football, I only followed football related accounts and I only commented on and participated in discussions about football. My entire timeline was football. Once Elon bought Twitter, I would randomly get a Benny Johnson or Charlie Kirk, etc post popping up in my timeline. Daily. No matter how many times I clicked “not interested,” muted people, blocked people, it didn’t matter. He bought this app to systematically brainwash Americans and we really should talk about it more.
Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth)@adamscochran

Part of it is that Elon pushes out push notifications for these alt-right propaganda slop accounts. If you create a new account on mobile, follow no one, and have your location set as US, you will almost certainly get notifications about Nick Sortor, Eric Daugherty and Jackson Hinkle tweets within the first two weeks.

Think about what Washington Republicans are actually asking you to believe: that there are noncitizens so committed to voting illegally that they’d risk deportation, prosecution, and everything we’ve seen ICE do, just to cast a ballot in our elections.      There is no documented crisis of noncitizens voting. It is already a federal crime, and it always has been.       Republicans invented a crisis that doesn’t exist so they could sell a “solution” that makes it harder for YOU to vote.      Call it what it is: the SAVE REPUBLICANS Act.

@soncharm @Ecclesiasticu12 Yet, the rule for balls lodged between walls almost singularly debunks this view. If retrievability was the sole factor, lodged balls should be just as fair game

My reasoning: The accomplishment of ‘home run’ we’re rewarding isn’t to have hit it ‘over the fence’ or some specific distance, like it’s basketball’s 3-pointer. Notice there’s no regularized fence-distance (or height), it’s different for every ballpark. Instead, ideally, it’s just to hit it some place where it is de facto irretrievable, at least, not by the time you can round the bases. ‘Over the fence’ is mostly just a proxy for ‘irretrievable’. But evidently, this one was retrievable.

I told my students last week that by giving over their critical thinking and other knowledge skills to generative AI, they are willingly turning themselves into slaves; as Frederick Dougalss wrote, "I found that to make a contented slave, it is necessary to make a thoughtless one. It is necessary to darken his moral and mental vision, and, as far as possible, annihilate the power of reasons."

.@jamestalarico: I've had a lot of interviews with national media. No one's ever asked me about the cost of housing. No one's asked me about the cost of prescription drugs. The only thing the media wants to ask me about are trans athletes. The only minority destroying this country is the billionaires. Trans people are 1% of the population. Undocumented people are 1% of the population. We are all focused on the wrong 1%. Trans people aren't taking away our healthcare. Undocumented people aren't defunding our schools. It's the billionaires and their puppet politicians

This gets said every week (and its always correct btw). Just this statement which will be forgotten in 2 hours would've sunk any other president in US History and their entire party for ~2 decades minimum. No exagerration at all. It would be quoted daily for eternity in US media. You would learn about in high school US history class. And this doesn't make top 100 worst actions / statements this week.

China knows exactly what this does. Their domestic version of TikTok caps kids under 14 at 40 minutes a day, locks access between 6am and 10pm, and swaps the entire feed to educational content. Science, history, museums. The version they export to everyone else? Unlimited, unrestricted, pure dopamine on demand. When kids in the US and China were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, the number one answer in America was influencer. In China it was astronaut. Macron calls this a cognitive war. Export what dulls young minds and keep what makes them intelligent for your own population. This is the most effective weapon ever deployed against a generation’s ability to think.

the murder rate is falling for the same reason that the birth rate is falling, and also why there's fewer bands forming and lower church attendance, why teens are less likely to get drivers licenses or participate in team sports, why brick and mortar retail is in a death gasp, why we're in a "sex recession", why shared living spaces in new apartments are smaller, why volunteering rates are at their lowest in decades... all of these things require or enable people to be around other people—and that's not happening any more.

George Kittle on the electrical substation next to the 49ers facility: “The one thing that messes me up with it, this is tough, my rookie season there used to be trees in between the substation and our practice facility. There’s a fence there too and above the fence all the trees had no leafs on them, year round, all dead. Nobody notices it until you point it out. I didn’t point it out to Kyle Shanahan until 2021. A vet pointed it out to me my rookie season and I was like 'That’s kind of weird'. But then this year the NFL came in and cut them all down. So they’re not there anymore so no one can see them. So it’s only us vets that know that was the truth. I don’t think anyone talked about that yet. That one messed me up.”

@WallStreetApes Based on her rationale, what would stop the airport from opening a store “on the street”, pricing everything 2x the local Walmart pricing, then using that store as a comp? Shameful

Denver International Airport pricing investigation shows basically every business in the airport is breaking the law There is a law that says items sold can only be marked up 15% from comparable items outside the airport. Here’s how much they are marked up - McDonald’s +114% markup - Starbucks +54% markup - Pretzels +108% markup - Red Vines +129% markup - Phone charger cable +57% markup - Bottles of Coke and Pepsi +32% markup - and more Of over 80 items investigated 75% of them broke the law
