Manchester United's performance doesn't matter tonight. The first half was good, the second half was very ugly. That shouldn't be a surprise considering the absences, Mason Mount's injury, all of it. What mattered was finding a way to grind out a result. They did that as a team.

Manchester United's squad is too good to be this bad. Where does this manager fit into the vision the leadership has for the club in the future? Was he identified with that purpose? This the brand of football they want to associate themselves with? We don't have a run of form to point to. We don't have a statement performance. I'm not even sure I can cling to a sense of identity, because I'm not convinced that there is one yet. There's nothing to believe in besides the hope that it gets better - but hope is not a strategy.
