There are truly a lot of disgusting things in the world of today but reading about babies being tortured to get confessions from their parents is way up there.

The conflict in the Middle East has gone too far. My message to the US & Israel is that it’s high time to end the war – as human suffering deepens, civilian casualties mount & the global economic impact is increasingly devastating. My message to Iran is to stop attacking their neighbors that are not parties to the conflict.

It doesn’t take more than a little bit of heart to feel sorrow at the loss of so many innocent people—and particularly children—anywhere, including Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, Israel and increasingly around the world. Really appalling.

One of the most heartbreaking examples of nonverbal communication to emerge from Iran. I cannot call this a mere propaganda piece. It is the unbearable truth, laid bare through the profound art of cinematography and animation.

Unpopular Opinion: We aren't building the future 10x faster with AI. We are just generating legacy code 10x faster. Everyone is currently bragging about developer velocity. "I built this entire backend in a weekend!" "AI wrote 80% of my codebase!" But here is the reality check we are ignoring: Code is a liability, not an asset. If an AI tool spits out 1,000 lines of functional boilerplate in five seconds, that is still 1,000 lines that a human being has to read, review, secure, and maintain when the dependencies inevitably break next year. We are treating code generation like a pure productivity win, but we are optimizing for the wrong metric. The bottleneck in software engineering was never how fast we could type. The bottleneck has always been comprehension, architecture, and maintenance. If we don't shift our focus from "generation speed" to "architectural sanity," the tech debt of the next five years is going to be an absolute, unmaintainable nightmare.

A personal update... after nearly 20 years at Google, today is my last day! I'm going to be working on independent research for the foreseeable future, then who knows! I've worked with so many talented people, made so many friends and seen incredible research over the years 🫡

@DanielLurie That’s an exciting update! We had several dangerous close calls while walking on Embarcadero.

If you live in San Francisco, you’ve seen it or heard it: large groups on dirt bikes and ATVs taking over our streets and sidewalks. They ride without licenses, ignore the law, and terrorize our communities. For years, it felt like the city couldn’t—or wouldn’t—stop it. Now we are. Yesterday, with coordination between SFPD’s Citywide Plainclothes Team, the Real Time Investigation Center, and uniformed officers—and with the help of drones and license plate readers—San Francisco carried out a major dirt bike enforcement operation, using every tool available to do it safely and effectively. The result: @SFPD officers made four arrests and seized six dirt bikes and an ATV. We have the technology, we have the officers, and we have a clear message: This dangerous behavior has no place in San Francisco.

Tonight we pour one to Boulettes Larder in the Ferry Building. We left for a week, came back to find it closed. The staff was always super kind, particularly with our baby, and the chef constantly changed the menu trying new items in season. We will miss them.

Google is living in the future.

@VP I am sure Lebanon would prefer the U.S. keeps the money but prevents the use of weapons that brought down all the buildings in Beirut to rubble.

The people of Lebanon are facing an increasingly dire humanitarian situation. I am concerned about the security and well-being of civilians suffering in Lebanon and will continue working to help meet the needs of all civilians there. To that end, the United States will provide nearly $157 million in additional assistance to the people of Lebanon for essential needs such as food, shelter, water, protection, and sanitation to help those who have been displaced by the recent conflict. This additional support brings total U.S. assistance to Lebanon over the last year to over $385 million.

@bdowney It plays well in the narrative of today, as an added justification as to why companies are streamlining. More companies today are having to focus on margins. When that changes, the narrative will evolve to how founders are great at hiring and delegating.

I don’t think founder mode would have had this positive reception in the most recent ZIRP era when hiring and funding were plentiful. But now…
