Zach Lahn’s “Iowa First” message hits home because it’s true. Big Ag consolidation, foreign investors buying up our land, Big Pharma’s influence, and out-of-state interests are hollowing out Iowa’s soul -- thousands of family farms lost, land leaving Iowan hands, rising cancer rates, and polluted water affecting our families. We cannot let profit-driven forces replace our faith, freedom, neighborly communities, and agrarian heritage.

Spent the last week at the farm spending time with family, building our team, and taking some overdue meetings. My favorite meeting was with the county conservation board who came out to the farm to help plan our creek restoration project.💧 In the 1950s my Great Grandpa Alfred straightened our creek and Uncle John told me he always regretted it. Like many of these streams in Iowa, there has been significant erosion and stream bank degradation over the years - we’ve lost a lot of soil. A couple years ago, we decided it was time to take steps to protect the soil and water by restoring the first section of Buckeye Creek. Last year, a class from Drake University came out to take water samples, check for fish, and macro invertebrates so we could establish a “before” picture. We are remeandering the channel, raising the bed, slowing the flow, resloping the banks, and planting a native buffer with plants that Dr. Rosburg says were here pre-settlement. This fall, once permits are complete, we are starting reconstruction. Uncle John once caught a 1.5lb bullhead in here. Dad caught many fish in here as a kid, and Hudson caught his first fish in this creek in 2016, and Evelyn got a pheasant with me there last winter. 🎣 Looking forward to many more Lahns catching fish here.

Radon mitigation companies are not commonly involved in new construction since trades will install the necessary components during the building process. Yes, it still costs more; however, the cost of the PVC pipe to the roof with a fan in the attic will currently cost be under $1k. Existing homes are not required to upgrade unless the buyer demands it (yet, almost all mortgage lenders do). I was still able to avoid upgrading my former home by accepting cash only. I totally get it. It's a cost that no one expects. Unfortunately, not having a radon mitigation system in Iowa is like having a roof that can't handle the load of a snow drift. It's not a problem until it is and it's completely avoidable within reason if planned for.

@thomasarchitect @TheVinoMom The problem with mandatory radon systems is companies can charge whatever they want. They’ll say sorry, it’s $5k now. What are you going to do? You have to pay it. No one would have an incentive to be competitive.

And now in Iowa we’re going to be forced to add radon systems to new houses, in addition to new green deal building code requirements which also add thousands of dollars to the cost of a new home. Labor is through the roof, too. @TheVinoMom talks about how private equity is buying up competing HVAC subcontractors and then price fixing. They want us to own nothing.
