@WendyClapp1 @NighttfallNF It’s not easy facing our mortality like this, when we had gotten past the worst of our fears by the very fact of things being so stable and predictable for so long. There are 3 nuke plants in our vicinity. We get the iodine tablets in the mail. I’m not sure I would take them.

That bag of ladybugs from the garden center isn't going to help your garden. It might hurt it. Ladybugs sold commercially are almost always wild-harvested: vacuumed up by the millions from their winter hibernation sites in the Sierra Nevada mountains, refrigerated, and shipped. When you release them, they don't know they're in your garden. They think they're still supposed to be migrating and studies show 95% fly away within 48 hours. The native ladybugs you actually want are already there, they just need a reason to stay. What actually works: plant dill, fennel, yarrow, and native wildflowers. Stop using pesticides, which kill ladybugs as efficiently as aphids. Leave some aphids alone long enough for the locals to find them. You can't buy your way to a healthy garden ecosystem. You have to build one.
