In 1981 my game Call of Cthulhu was published. I thought it would be a minor cult game, selling only amongst the few Lovecraft fans who existed back then. Instead, it became a major influence in roleplaying. Almost every gamer knew of it, even if they didn't play it. Of course there were misconceptions like "Don't you always die?" I was pretty psyched in the late 80s when I was talking to a bunch of TSR employees and they told me that at TSR (the D&D company) the teams only played Call of Cthulhu for pleasure, almost never D&D except for playtests. That was gratifying. 1/3

In the 90s I found out that Call of Cthulhu (published by Arclight) was the number one roleplaying game in Japan! That was exciting. I imagine part of the reason is that the Western legends of knights, wizards, and dragons while obviously evocative to the Japanese (as witness so many animes) were, ultimately, foreign concepts. But otherworld horrors fit right into the Japanese culture. Heck, Japan has more types of spooks than any other nation. But this led to an interesting phenomena - in America almost everyone who plays Call of Cthulhu must first pass through the Great Filter of D&D. That is - they play D&D first to learn about roleplaying. THEN they hear about the esoteria of Call of Cthulhu and try it out. Therefore, Call of Cthulhu players are a subset of former D&D players. Also, in America, D&D is primarily a male phenomenon. Yes there are plenty of female players but most gaming tables are 75-90% men. This makes sense, because D&D is very combat, testosterone, strife-based, and not all women like action movies as much as do men. However, women love horror stories in equal amounts to men. As a result, Call of Cthulhu always had a slightly higher percentage of female players than D&D - not a vast amount more, but it was noticeable. The numbers were still less than half, because, again, a woman to play Call of Cthulhu first had to try D&D which cut back on their numbers. But in Japan, there was no D&D Great Filter. The first roleplaying game for most people was Call of Cthulhu. As a result, Call of Cthulhu in Japan has a LOT of women players. I've been reliably informed that the percentage of women in Call of Cthulhu is about 70%! Since Call of Cthulhu in Japan actually outsells Call of Cthulhu everywhere else in the world combined, this means the average player of my game is an 18-35 year old Japanese woman. And please note, Call of Cthulhu is neither obscure nor minor in the rest of the world. It's just really big in Japan. 2/3

In 2019 I got to confirm this for myself. I attended a big Call of Cthulhu convention in Tokyo (with my wife). There were rows and rows of tables with people selling their little Call of Cthulhu adventure pamphlets, usually with an anime-styled picture on front. (Arclight wisely has open sourced Call of Cthulhu adventures.) And yep, somewhere around 70% of the people selling their adventures were women. They all bowed and were excited to meet me. I tried to make my wife jealous about all the cute Japanese girls but she just laughed at me. I also played in a presentation game, in which the keeper and all the other players were women. So that was interesting. There was a big screen above us that showed what we were doing to the crowd. Anyway as you can imagine I'm a big fan of Japan because it seems y'all are a big fan of at least some of my work. You can look me up on grokipedia as well as wikipedia. 3/3
