Firas and I have agreed to revisit our exchange here. I believe this format is not the best for debates, especially when it comes to contentious issues. The main points I made during this discussion: 1. I don’t consider the historian Will Durant a ‘libtard’. 2. I do not take it as a given that the Iranian regime doesn’t want to develop nuclear weapons. Officials of it have claimed that this is what they are doing and from a Machiavellian perspective, they have every incentive to say otherwise. This reinforces my suspicion that they are religious fanatics; not exactly a controversial statement. In such cases, when people tell you who they are, believe them. 3. I don’t see how the construction of an extra energy pipeline would be a bad thing. The more energy networks there are for Europeans to get energy from, the less dependent Europeans are on whoever controls each individual network. I agree that nuclear energy is the way, but until then, we have to get energy from as many sources as possible. 4. I think that an Iranian regime with nuclear weapons is a significant threat. Much more than the potential construction of a third temple in Jerusalem. I am not a theologian and I may miss something here. If something like this happened via disrespecting other temples, (like the turning of Agia Sophia into a mosque) it would be a bad thing. But I don’t think the destruction of the world will come this way. 5. A state’s response to Genghis-Khan-types cannot be ONLY trying to turn them Christians, especially when time is of the essence. I cannot stop individual Christians from trying to convert the officials of the current Iranian regime, but I don’t think it is likely to work as a strategy. It will privately result in meaningless deaths. And I also don’t think the proper response to the decline of Europe and the crimes that accompany it, is to passively try to convert whoever commits these crimes. Sadly, persuasion doesn’t work with everyone and I reject any notion that people should passively accept their domination to atone for metaphysical sin. 6. I find the various conspiracies I’ve heard about and some spaces’ obsession with ‘the Jews’ tiresome. I have no problem with criticisms of particular governments as well as national policies but when I hear ‘the Jews’ being blamed simultaneously for excessive aggression in the region to prevent Islamists from getting nukes and also for being behind the Islamisation of Europe and the west (which by implication would give Islamists access to nukes), I cannot but think that this is just lazy, tiring, and provocateur bullshit. Many think this but won’t say this in public for various reasons. [And to be clear, I’m NOT saying that Firas said this]. I’m looking forward to the continuation of this conversation in a more appropriate format and I believe it will be productive.
