Got blocked by Kramnik yesterday, so thought I would celebrate it by making this parody video :). It is not perfect, but I spent way too many hours on it! I did entertain myself - so I hope I can also entertain you :).

19...Rh6! by Caruana is one of those incredibly strong moves that often goes underappreciated/unnoticed! The idea? Simply defend the g6 pawn in order to be able to play Kg8 and then threaten d5. Easy to understand, but very difficult to find (at least for FM like me).

LOOOOOOOOOOOL A friend of mine has just played this game, and his opponent had a premove for ...Nxc5 in case of bxc5. What could possibly go wrong xD

@PattyLlaneza Playing Najdorf sounds good, not even sure why he is bothering with 1...e5 while so young :P. Or at the very least, not play the Berlin? I haven't coached any players to 2500, but I would certainly ask them to play for a win in every game at that age and rating.

@Chessentials_ I don't care if he's a kid or not. What do you want him to do? Play ...Kd8 here? Play a Najdorf every day? What exactly is normalized here?

@ruariemorrison Yeah, fair. It is easy to understand. It is certainly not a pattern in all of the games. Sad to see nevertheless.

@Chessentials_ I think that’s fair. Is it possible though that Oro didn’t know that Cheparinov was going to go into this though, and just decided to take what he was offered? I mean, who in his shoes wouldn’t?

@ruariemorrison I don't know, I think it is sad and symptomatic that we are sending a message to 12-year old that it is ok to basically (pre)arrange a result of the game when it matters.

@Chessentials_ True, but I think it’s likely his decision making when a GM norm is on the line is not necessarily representative of how he would approach most chess games generally, especially when a GM basically just offers it to him

@Willenyhlen I don't think getting a norm should be your main concern in a chess tournament when you are 12 (and maybe not only when you are 12). Playing chess should be. That goes for both of these players.

@Chessentials_ imagine you play a really good tournament, one black game away from clutching the norm and then white decides to play into this line. Automatically losing you the norm since games like this apparently shouldn't count?

@ruariemorrison Yeah, but don't you think it is sad that at the age of 12 you are already only thinking about results/norms/records, and not just about playing chess? (I am surely this is hugely influenced by coaches/parents and I just find it sad).

@Chessentials_ Yeah I mean it was cheparinov’s call to go into this, he could’ve tried to beat fausti if he wanted to; obviously if you need just a draw for a GM norm you’re going to take a quick draw

@mikecantreed1 @knighttakesf7 I won't even get into all the other problems related to GM norm events in this context, I have written about it extensively in the past.

@knighttakesf7 @Chessentials_ The point he’s making is that it’s likely this 2600 was paid to soft play the kid so he could get a norm. Who would play a forced draw as white when you are 150 points higher rated?

@knighttakesf7 Of course White has a major share of responsibility. But Fausti could have also selected an opening that doesn't necessarily allow a quick draw (e.g. Sicilian instead of Berlin). Don't you think it is sad that a 12-year old is already this pragmatic/result focused?

@Chessentials_ The onus is on the 2600 GM to try and win with white. I don’t see how you can blame black for simply playing the best moves

@davidllada ... and I find this kind of laziness/lack of thorough research disappointing, especially when it doesn't come from some rando, but someone who has some credentials and tries to establish themselves as an authority. I think this is a big problem in the (chess) world.

@davidllada Yeah, but he has this habit of coming out with some "controversial" and "groundbreaking" takes about chess education without necessarily having a good overview/research of what is already out there. And we don't have that many chess curricula... 1/2

@Chessentials_ A part time coach here teaching kids in the age bracket of 6-9. The curriculum used by the club. Before studying the pins, a kid spends a good few months going through these basic themes. At this point Nates just ragebaiting.
