I tend to trust doctors who don't want to censor other doctors. I tend to trust scientists who don't want to censor other scientists.

@lsanger "an early unified Church speaking with a single voice" Laughably false. The Nicene Creed sparked 50 years of fighting within the church because of the extra-biblical language. Why do you opine without researching this?

Very well, let’s make this clear and repudiate this obscurantism. It doesn’t matter which version of the Nicene Creed you choose; you have to endorse one; they all do the job of summarizing the foundational doctrines of Scripture. Their authority obviously does not come from any emperor, but from the fact that they represent an early unified Church speaking with a single voice and justified explicitly and at length by Scripture. Accepting the Nicene Creed is not a sufficient condition for being Christian, but a necessary one. Any sect that rejects any one of the Nicene doctrines under any reasonable interpretation—like the LDS—therefore rejects some essential doctrine expressed clearly and repeatedly in Scripture.

When you say I have to accept “the Nicene Creed” to be Christian, could you be more specific? Do you mean the creed produced in A.D. 325 at a council convened by the Roman emperor Constantine, who was trying to settle the Arian controversy and preserve unity in his empire? Or do you mean the version most Christians actually recite today, which comes from A.D. 381, when another Roman emperor, Theodosius I, convened the First Council of Constantinople to settle further disputes and more fully define the doctrine of the Holy Spirit? Because that seems like a pretty important distinction. One was created under Constantine, a Roman emperor with no priesthood authority, whose interest in Christianity was inseparable from his interest in imperial stability. The other was expanded under Theodosius, another Roman emperor who used state power to enforce religious uniformity. And somehow I’m supposed to believe that my faith in Jesus Christ is invalid unless I accept the theological conclusions of emperor-sponsored councils held centuries after Christ and His apostles? You are free to trust those councils, led by rulers of the same empire that crucified Christ. But please stop pretending that your post-biblical, politically entangled, imperial committee language is simply “biblical truth.” And stop acting like you have the authority to decide who is and is not Christian based on a person’s willingness to pledge allegiance to Rome’s preferred definition of the Divine.

@theistinthought This is not a big deal. We can stipulate that you accept the Nicene Creed if you accept all of the tenets of the Nicene Creed.

For months, my ex joked about getting me a toaster for Christmas & I told him I didn't want a toaster. Every time he brought it up I said please don't. The week before Xmas, I specifically told him getting a toaster would hurt my feelings after saying don't a dozen times. Family was all there and I open a toaster. He thinks it's so funny. I opened the door and tossed off the balcony. "Look, a flying toaster" He was pissed.

@lsanger @MrFluferMufin I already gave up on him. He got mad that I believed the entire Bible in the original Greek. Creeds can drive people crazy.

@DOWResponse I still don't understand what Christian Non-Denominational means. The only true Christian entry on that list is "Catholic"...at least according to Christ.

Last week, a proposed list of simplified faith codes was released to the media. The Pentagon list included redundant and unnecessary labeling, and the mistake has been fixed. The goal of this effort is to simplify a previously out-of-control “belief” coding system that had ballooned to over 200 codes. In order to clarify the work of chaplains, and simplify the work of commanders, the Pentagon has consolidated and simplified the list to roughly thirty codes — using the previously used labels for faiths. The Pentagon’s job is not to adjudicate theological debates, but instead to ensure sincerely-held faith is respected and encouraged in our ranks. Below is the updated Religious Affiliation Codes (RAC) list:

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 12 months. In the beginning, we’d split everything. Then he started “forgetting” his wallet. The first time, no big deal. The second time, okay, mistakes happen. The third, fourth, and fifth time? It started feeling intentional. Every time we’d go out, he’d order appetizers, drinks, dessert, the whole nine yards. Then when the bill came he’d pat his pockets and say, “Babe, you’re gonna kill me… I forgot my wallet.” I brought it up multiple times. He always laughed and said I was overthinking it. Last Saturday we went to a steakhouse. He ordered a $50 steak, shrimp, cocktails, and cheesecake. I got a salad and water because I was trying to save money. When the bill came, he did the usual pocket check and looked at me. Except this time I smiled and said, “That’s crazy. I forgot mine too.” His face dropped. Turns out he had his wallet the entire time.

@MrFluferMufin @lsanger I agreed with you here, and you still want to pick a fight. Who taught you and trained you to be a schismatic? Do you know what the NT says about picking fights that are not necessary?

@ElonsonBack @lsanger This is what Christians have believed for 2000 years. I already shared the verse where God says there He is the only God, none before and none after, and that He is the savior. For Jesus to be the sacrifice for salvation and the savior for mankind, he has to be that God.
