I don't understand the general infatuation with Cavalli. 18th percentile in Ks. xERA 39th percentile. xBA 20th. If you are crazy enough to pay retail on spring training stats: 19.6% Ks vs. 7.4 (lower AA) comp. There is nothing here, objectively. Must be the "pitch metrics."

Simplest way I can put it is that he has one of the highest whiff rates in the entire league and struggles to consistently get the ball into 80% of his max EV, which is analytically measuring how often you hit the ball clean. Obviously, the rest of the package is extreme enough that it doesn’t really matter because he’s a true outlier pretty much everywhere else.

This is the exact reason I like to give both a hit tool grade and an approach grade. Very different tools imo. I view hit tool as bat path, simplicity of set up, barrel adjustability and pure contract ability. Approach is tracking velo/spin, feel for the zone, tape study on the arms you’re facing and pitch selection in relation to where you are in the count and in the game. Different skillsets that shouldn’t be counted as the same tool imo.
