The problem with casting a closer relationship with Europe as the solution to the world's current economic malaise is that it kind of misses the point. The key problem at present is a shortage of ENERGY. Europe has an energy deficit. Up until 2022 it filled that gap with gas from Russia. Now it fills that gap with gas (and oil) from the US and Middle East. It swapped one dependency for another. We can debate whether that dependency is inevitable, the extent to which it's a function of geology and/or political decisions taken years ago. Regardless, right now Europe is highly exposed to the problems in the Gulf. And without US energy imports it is in BIG trouble. A closer relationship between the UK and the EU does not solve this conundrum.

CHAGOS: THE KILLER BLOW 🇮🇴 💥🤯 Me for @Telegraph If you thought the farce of Labour’s Chagos deal couldn’t be any more shambolic, then you underestimated Sir Keir Starmer. Not only have all the opposition parties, the president of the United States, the Chagossians themselves and even the United Nations lined up against this deal – now the courts have ruled against it. The Prime Minister, the haughty King’s Counsel and former director of public prosecutions, has been humbled on his own wicket. “Mr Rules”, who set international law on a pedestal above the British national interest, has been laughed out of court. The Government even had the gall to threaten the brave Chagos landing party with jail time, while serious and violent criminals run riot in Britain. Drop this dreadful deal and get on with fixing the issues all of us in Britain are facing! Like our border crisis, the stalled economy, an ever-ballooning welfare bill, a youth unemployment crisis, unacceptably high waiting lists, a lack of housing, the list goes on. You have to feel sorry for the Mauritian government, which trusted Starmer’s word, that he could get this deal over the line. They must feel pretty silly for thinking Starmer might deliver. Then again, JOIN THE CLUB.
