Dear Mr Governor,
Thank you for "ordering" the "immediate deployment" of garbage trucks and "directing" an "immediate scale up of waste evacuation across Lagos". Suck fine words.
However, by these words, you have thrown your Commissioner for Environment directly under the bus, indicating that he is incompetent. This is NOT good leadership.
My first question is, given that your administration's Waste Management efforts, such as there have been, have been markedly shoddy, since you took office in 2019, how did you arrive at your 13,000 ton figure for daily generation of waste in Lagos? Is this a case of inventing statistics on the spot?
My second question, Mr. Governor, is, when you have so gallantly gathered all this waste this week, where do you plan to put it? I ask this question because I am aware that Lagos state lacks the capacity to process 13,000 tons of waste a month.
Are you still engaging in the ancient art of landfilling, or do you plan to dump the waste in our waterways?
Inquiring minds, especially the Indigenous People of Lagos State, want to know.

LAWMA, LASEPA, and the Ministry of Environment are currently working around the clock. We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again. Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste every single day. Managing this requires a massive effort but our determination to fix the current challenge is absolute. As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads. We are fully on top of this situation. Let us work together to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone.

This is Broad street, Lagos island the financial hub of Nigeria looks like this evening.
Most major Nigerian banks are headquartered on this same street that looks like a refuse dump.

Almost every major road is littered with dirt,Never been this terrible.
7up/Alapere axis has Waste trucks litering main road and the stench from the water causes deadly odour.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Intervention Team has successfully cleared heaps of illegally dumped waste from the median of the Egbeda–Idimu Road and Lawanson, Surulere corridor. The Authority used the opportunity to reiterate its warning to residents, traders, and motorists against the unlawful disposal of refuse on road medians and other unauthorized locations, noting that such practices obstruct drainage channels, degrade the environment, and pose serious public health risks. LAWMA urged residents to patronize only approved waste collection services and comply with environmental sanitation regulations, stressing that violators will be sanctioned in accordance with extant laws of Lagos State. #CleanerLagos

Yesterday, while passing through Fadeyi Road, I saw someone dumping refuse illegally and had to stop to document it. I also raised concerns about the growing heap of waste at the location. Today, I passed by again and was pleased to see LAWMA already clearing the site. Kudos to @tokunbo_wahab, @Lawma_gov and the Lagos environmental team for the swift response. Let’s all do our part. It makes no sense to clear the area today and return tomorrow to dump refuse there again. @followlasg @LAGESCOfficial @muyiwag #CleanerLagos #GreaterLagos
