Today, we are proud to partner with primary schools in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru County, in the distribution of fruit trees under the @MauForest_iclip. The activity forms part of the build-up to #WorldMetDay, themed “Predicting Today, Protecting Tomorrow,” which will be commemorated at the KALRO Grounds in Njoro, Nakuru County. Through this initiative, a total of 480 assorted fruit trees have been distributed to 12 primary schools, with each school receiving 40 fruits trees. This initiative is aimed at enhancing nutrition among school-going children while promoting sustainable environmental stewardship, with the distributed trees set to play a vital role in strengthening food security, improving nutrition, and instilling a lasting culture of environmental conservation among learners. #LindaMauBoreshaMaisha #MFC_ICLIP #JazaMiti #FruitTrees

Principal Secretary for Irrigation, @EphantusKim, this evening hosted dignitaries at a resource mobilization dinner for the Oloolua Conservation Action for Resilience and Ecosystem Integrity (OLOOLUA C.A.R.E) Initiative in Nairobi. The initiative seeks to implement participatory, nature based conservation strategies aimed at protecting biodiversity, restoring degraded ecosystems, promoting sustainable land use, and empowering local communities through knowledge and livelihood opportunities. Chief Guest @Kiptoock led the delegation, with pledges covering 23 kilometres secured towards the targeted 27 kilometres of forest fencing, marking a significant milestone in safeguarding the ecosystem. The restoration effort adopts a whole of government and whole of society approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders to drive sustainable conservation outcomes. Joining the event were Principal Secretaries Dr. @Eng_F_Ngeno(Environment and Climate Change), @Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Betsy Njagi (Blue Economy), @John Tanui (ICT) @DrRonohpaul (Agriculture)and Hon. Adequate budgets are essential for turning environmental and climate commitments into meaningful action by supporting sustainable initiatives, protecting biodiversity, and advancing green solutions, while enabling long-term planning and effective climate risk management. Today, I had the privilege of presenting the FY 2025/26 Supplementary Estimates for the State Department for Environment and Climate Change to the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, chaired by Mwala MP, Hon. Eng. Vincent Musyoka. In a constrained fiscal space, we continue to focus on delivering tangible progress while strengthening partnerships and collaboration with development partners through bilateral engagements, grants, and technical cooperation to complement national efforts. As we look ahead, sustained investment remains critical to maintaining momentum and advancing key environmental priorities. While partnerships are valuable, adequate domestic funding is essential to ensure continuity, meet obligations, and strengthen climate resilience. Kenya Seeks KSh 247 Million Budget Increase for Environment and Climate Programs The State Department for Environment and Climate Change has proposed a KSh 247 million increase in its recurrent budget for the 2025/26 financial year to support operations, settle legal obligations, and strengthen environmental programs. The Supplementary Estimates for FY 2025/26 were presented by Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno to the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, chaired by Mwala MP Hon. Eng. Vincent Musyoka, during a meeting held at a hotel in Machakos. The PS said the additional funds are mainly required to cover operations and maintenance, legal obligations, and transfers to the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND). However, the development budget is expected to decrease by KSh 231 million, affecting some environmental restoration and mining projects. Additional funds will also support Kenya’s participation in major international environmental events and negotiations, including climate conferences and global environmental forums, which provide platforms for the State Department to mobilize resources. Despite funding constraints, the State Department reported several achievements during the review period, including issuing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licences and conducting air quality monitoring in Nairobi and Mombasa. The department also undertook enforcement actions related to the nationwide single-use plastics ban, raised tree seedlings, and rehabilitated degraded forest in the Cherangany ecosystem. Additionally, the department trained stakeholders on environmental compliance and carbon markets, while weather agencies issued timely forecasts to support early warning systems. However, the proposed reduction in development spending will significantly impact two major initiatives. The Kenya Gold Mercury-Free Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Project and the Restoration and Management of Ecosystems for Climate Change Resilience Project. The PS decried that the budget cuts could reduce forest rehabilitation targets and decrease tree seedling production. He urged Parliament to increase financial allocations and avoid frequent budget cuts, arguing that adequate funding is necessary for Kenya to effectively address climate change impacts and fulfill its environmental mandate. Members present included Hon. Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Hon. Namuar Emathe (Turkana Central), and Hon. Joseph Wainaina (Nominated). The meeting was also attended by NEMA Director General Dr. Mamo Mamo, NETFUND CEO Samson Toniok, Secretary Administration Mr. Mwongo Chimwaga, among other heads of departments.

NETFUND and @Joyful_Women have strengthened their partnership in advancing environmental conservation and livelihood improvement through the signing of two key documents: a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Implementation Agreement. The agreements were signed by the CEO NETFUND, Mr. Samson Toniok and the Chief of Staff, Office of the First Lady, Ms. Mary Muinde. The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration that leverages the strengths, competencies, and missions of both institutions to promote initiatives that advance sustainable energy, environmental conservation, climate resilience, and community empowerment. The Implementation Agreement provides guidelines for the rollout of select interventions under the “Restoration and Sustainable Management of Cherang’any Forest Ecosystems for Climate Change Resilience and Improved Livelihoods Project.” Key interventions under the partnership include: i. Promotion of apiculture ii. Support for the adoption of clean cooking technologies iii. Promotion of water access and management, including the supply of water tanks iv. Promotion of agroforestry practices such as the integration of high-value fruit trees v. Rolling out innovative financing mechanisms to support nature-based enterprises, clean cooking technologies, and improved water access. Through this partnership, and aim to strengthen community resilience while promoting sustainable management of the Cherang’any forest ecosystem.

NEMA Kenya in partnership with United Platform Solutions (UPS), has developed the Kenya Online Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (KOCEMS)—a landmark initiative that introduces a new era of digital environmental regulation and real-time pollution monitoring in Kenya. KOCEMS was unveiled today in an event presided by the CS Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa, EGH accompanied by NEMA’s Mr. David Ong’are, Director Environmental Compliance representing the Director General. While making her key note address, the CS stated that air pollution remains a major environmental and public health challenge across Africa, contributing to over 1.1 million premature deaths annually. She underscored that the introduction of this system represents a major step in not only strengthening environmental compliance and enforcement but also supporting evidence based policy decision making which will enhance the protection of public health and the environment. The CS encouraged all regulated facilities to work closely with NEMA and the UPS to ensure the successful implementation of the program.

The launch of KOCEMS today marks a major step forward in strengthening environmental governance in Kenya through improved regulatory oversight. CS for the @Environment_Ke @DeboraBarasa presided over the launch of the pilot system by NEMA, a platform developed by UPS.
