Basically, @NYCSchools is “rolling out AI tools without clear rules, transparency, or adequate knowledge of the technology" And it’s a huge problem. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/0…

🦔A Boston startup called Alpha School has opened an AI-powered school promising students will complete academics in two hours a day with no teachers, replaced by "guides" who monitor progress. Each student gets a laptop with an AI tutor that adapts to their level. The school has the backing of Melania Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon. A February investigation by 404 Media found the school's AI system generated questions about sections not in the article, questions with multiple plausible correct answers, and questions that contradicted other parts of the same text. The school also maintains a spreadsheet of student names, grades, and webcam recordings that was accessible to anyone on the internet with the link. My Take We covered research showing fifteen years of laptops in Maine classrooms produced no improvement in test scores, and schools across the country reversing tech-first policies after reading comprehension declined. Alpha School is doubling down on the same approach that failed, adding AI tutors to replace the teachers whose absence was already a problem, and doing it at the kindergarten level. The two hours a day claim is what I find most concerning as an education proposition. Elementary school is not primarily about academic content delivery. It is where children learn to sit with frustration, navigate conflict with peers, follow instructions from an adult who isn't their parent, and develop the social infrastructure that every subsequent stage of life depends on. An AI tutor optimized for academic throughput cannot provide any of that. The founders of this school are solving the wrong problem with the wrong tool and the children enrolled in it are the ones who will find out years from now what was missing. Hedgie🤗

“Students are using gen AI to write before they learn how to write-reading ChatGPT summaries of a book before they have ever read a book…result is a diminished population.” But he noted schools serving low-income students are often under pressure to show they are embracing tech.

“The integration of LLMs into learning environments,” a 2025 study out of M.I.T. cautioned, “may inadvertently contribute to cognitive atrophy.” (The authors appended an F.A.Q. to the paper with instructions on how to discuss its findings: “Please do not use the words like ‘stupid’, ‘dumb’, ‘brain rot’, ‘harm’, ‘damage’, ‘brain damage’, ‘passivity’, ‘trimming’ and so on.”) newyorker.com/culture/progre…

@pistnyc We know many new AI products have been pressed on @NYCschools in the last few weeks & installed on student Chromebooks including Google Gemini- without DoE asking PEP to approve their contracts. This is being done quietly- probably to avoid resistance or outcry,

True! “The intense outrage among parents in New York City [about AI] is as great as I’ve seen it on any education issue that I’ve been working on for 25 years,” said Leonie Haimson, an education advocate & member of Coalition for an A.I. Moratorium. nytimes.com/2026/04/27/nyr…

An extremely dangerous version of educational tyranny. Teachers say this program Google Gemini is now being installed on student Chromebooks by @nycschools Thnx @winterjessica for making the case so clear why we need AI moratorium now. But is @ZohranKMamdani paying attention?

When my daughter "begins writing an essay, she gets a prompt: 'Help me write.' If she is starting work on a slide-show presentation, the prompt is 'Help me visualize.' She shoos away these interruptions, but they persist: 'Help me edit.'" Welcome to hell👿 newyorker.com/culture/progre…

The reporters at Acutus news site are AI bots. OpenAI’s super PAC appears to be funding it. Around 15% of the articles cover AI, casts aspersions on Anthropic & criticizes states regulating AI. And these guys are training NYC teachers on how to use AI? open.substack.com/pub/modelrepub…
