Almost forgotten now, Elisaveta Fen (Lydia Jackson, nee Jiburtovich, 1899-1983) was a prominent figure in the White Russian community in London. Her translations of Chekhov’s plays are still in use by theatres, she wrote valuable memoirs, and was George Orwell‘s unrequited love.

“Many English people thought that the revolution would splash elixir of life on Russia...what infantile ignorance!” - Ivan Bunin, first Russian writer to get a Nobel Prize (died #OTD 70 years ago). He was a brilliant translator from English though his spoken language was poor.
