Just perusing some Mircea Luceacu teamsheets. He played against Charlton, Banks, St. John, Aragonés & Amancio - all born in the 1930s - yet nearly led Romania to the 2026 World cup. What a life.

New article from E. D. Hirsch and me on (1) the evidence for the importance of knowledge in reading; (2) why it’s taken so long for people to acknowledge the evidence; (3) what we predict if the role of knowledge is taken seriously. educationnext.org/rediscovering-…

Innate mathematical talent exists. But talent is not a substitute for structure. Some people can build mathematical knowledge faster, more easily, and with less friction than others. Even so, genuine long-term strength depends on the quality of the hierarchy they build.
Alex Smith@ninja_maths

Contrary to what many assume, mathematical strength or success is not about “having a math brain.” Instead, it's much more about building and nurturing an unusually solid hierarchy of mathematical knowledge over an extended period of time.

People don't hate math; they hate the feeling of being lost. They hate the compounded debt of unlearned prerequisites.

Many elegant high-level ideas in math only feel elegant after the lower-level machinery has become automatic. Without that fluency, students are often expected to appreciate architecture while still struggling with the bricks and mortar.

Everytime I get mad at my sports team for losing, I remind myself of what Giannis said. Arguably my favorite response to a reporter ever.

View from my balcony in Sofia is absolutely peak Balkan courtyard: quondam communal garden now just a motley scrub of grass and weeds, carpet-beating frame structurally unemployed since early 90s, slowly molting plastered wall, semi-stray cat with dominion over it all. Amazing 😻

For decades many people suspected that grade inflation in Western education systems was not harmless. Now there is hard economic evidence. A recent paper, “Easy A’s, Less Pay: The Long-Term Effects of Grade Inflation,” finds something striking:
