I think I'm the only person who watched this movie today and actually enjoyed it lol. Seems everyone else is just talking about how bad it is. Glad I have my Nintendo nostalgia bias (Nintendo was my entire life/childhood) to be able to ignore that.

@kirkneverdied Except the story in Mario Galaxy is good. It tells a good story about family. It isn’t super deep but it doesn’t need to be. The ironic thing is those looking for only story and/or thematic elements completely missed both of them.

Two things can be true at once: (1) Many critics are overly critical of the film, (2) the movie has basic story problems.
There's a lot of room between "Turn your brain off"
and "a profound commentary on the human condition."
Wanting Mario to have a good story isn't an indictor or jaded, cynical critic.

Not every movie needs a super serious, deep story with heavy emotional arcs or "important" themes. Some movies, especially animated family ones like these, are allowed to just be pure fun: colorful, fast-paced, packed with references, and built like a video game come to life.
The critics keep treating the Mario movies like they’re supposed to be the next Inside Out or Toy y Story, demanding tight plotting, profound character growth, and cinematic "weight." But that’s not what this is. It’s a celebration of Nintendo’s world. These movies resonate perfectly with their target audience, the critics are just out of touch.

@ChronoKatie The Mario Galaxy was approximately 90 min of pure whimsy and joy. As a lifelong gamer I greatly enjoyed it and will be getting the 4K Steelbook on Amazon. I appreciated the details in it and the story (yes there was a story critics seemed to have missed).

I’m not sure how you adapt something with the sense of wonder, whimsical vibes and beautiful melancholy of something like Mario Galaxy and put none of it in a feature film, but gosh darnit, they pulled it off.

I can’t vibe w/ folk who say “Well, it’s a MARIO MOVIE. The games don’t have great stories anyways!”
Phil Lord and Chris Miller gave us a movie based of LEGO PIECES and it was really freaking good.
Pixar made a movie based of EMOTIONS and it worked.
Illumination just ain’t it.

@kiwitalkz I very much disagree and feel reviewers might have finally lost it here. The movie was entertaining and was approximately and hour and a half of whimsy and joy. Some reviewers need to remember it is ok to have fun. I’m also surprised at how many missed the themes in the movie.

Just got out of the theatre.
I will be doing a full review in a few weeks with some former Nintendo devs so here’s a small review for the time being.
The movie is very much for kids, Mario fans and people with ADHD lol.
The music and animation are great and Fox and Yoshi are highlights but my big issue with this movie is the same I had with the previous movie it just doesn’t take a breath, these movies have so much potential but they squander them by filling them with a huge amount of easter eggs, sometimes less is more, maybe making the movie 30 minutes longer would help in future.
Overall if you didn’t like the first movie you won’t like this and if you did you’ll like this one
Personally I’d give it a 6/10

it's gorgeous and JAM-PACKED with awesome orchestral Mario music. Way less licensed music. Lots of awesome references. Wasn't expecting a good story & I didnt get one but I still yearn for a world where these are as funny and witty as the Lego movies.

There is a whole generation of men out here who are absolutely exhausted from being the "transitional guy." They come into your life, absorb all the trauma your toxic ex left behind, provide stability, and love you gently. But because your brain is still addicted to chaos, you mistake his consistency for a lack of passion. You drain his peace to heal yourself, and then abandon him because there isn't enough "drama" to keep you entertained. Men are constantly being used as emotional handymen to fix damage they didn't cause, only to be discarded the second the foundation is stable. It is pure emotional vampirism.
