India’s Rs 1 lakh crore R&D fund: speed was the signal, but Rs 5 lakh crore is the point. “I’ve never seen anyone move at this pace, let alone the govt. I’m flabbergasted, honestly,” said the founder of a beneficiary company of the RDI Fund in May. the-ken.com/story/indias-r…

The most irritating guy on the whole internet
Jasveer Singh@jasveer10

Oh hello, @durov Nobody is using Telegram in India for messaging. Telegram is mostly used by scammers in India. Most financial fraud (Billions of dollars) in India happens through Telegram The Indian government should have banned Telegram years ago. It is long overdue. I’ve been noticing the same pattern for years. Almost every fraudster immediately moves to Telegram. it’s harder to trace, easier to operate. Calling this an internet freedom issue misses the point completely. Telegram became one of the preferred platforms for financial fraud, scam networks, betting groups, piracy, and other illegal activities in India.

How babus harm Indian Engineers: I ran a US based startup. My engineering team was in India. Not in Bangalore or Delhi, but scattered across small towns and villages around UP/Bihar/Assam. They were some of the best engineers I have worked with anywhere. The only thing they lacked was the ability to speak English like someone who went to a Delhi private school. That one accident of birth kept them off the rosters of every shiny startup. I turned that into an advantage. I go find them. And I pay them exactly what an English-speaking engineer in Bangalore would get, without making them move. Same code, same salary. English fluency was never the skill I was hiring for. Now I wanted to give them what my US team members had: ownership. A real piece of what they were building. For a young dude from a village in Gonda or Chapra, that can be generational, life-changing money when we exit. But I could’t. The moment an Indian employee exercise their options (convert them to shares), without selling anything they get taxed on the paper gain as salary (I have heard it could be as high as 42%). For a private company, no buyer, no liquidity, no cash. But they get slapped with a tax bill, sometimes larger than their salary, on money they haven't earned. So, if I gave them equity, the choice I wd have forced on those engineers was: pay lakhs out of pocket for shares they can't sell, or give up the equity. In the US employees pay nothing until they sell, and if they hold long enough, they may pay almost nothing at all (federal). I have heard that in India , there is a "deferral" now. But if my info is correct, it covers ~2% of startups. Like most other startups, mine wont qualify. The fix is one line: tax the shares when they are sold, not when they are bought. Every developed country does it. India could do it tomorrow but it does not. Why? Due to babus (not Nirmala S).

For eg in China if you dont spend a portion of your expenses in R&D then you will have to Pay 25% Taxes. Cos with > than 5% of their Total expenses in R&D get a Tax rate of 15%. They may also get super Tax cuts if they achieved extraordinary Feats. So dont give your usual cope.

R&D policies are a State subject. A capitalist regardless of nationality will always try to chimp out on R&D as R&D is a risky Endeavour. Make Tax policies discriminatory against those who dont invest in R&D and you will naturally see the results. You have good Eg in China.
Badmos Batakh@chambal_aale

Indian middle class will cry about lack of R&D on twitter and then go buy share of companies with high profit margin and divided. Hypocrites of highest order.

I don’t think you understand the scale of the fraud problem in India. Go through cybercrime complaints, police reports, enforcement actions, and fraud investigations. The data tells a very different story. You’re treating this as a theoretical internet freedom debate. I’m looking at it from the perspective of what is actually happening on the ground. A lot of people have strong opinions about Telegram. Very few have spent time looking at the scale of scams, fraud networks, betting groups, and illegal operations running through it. The problem with your argument is that it’s based on a slippery-slope fear, not on the reality of what Telegram has become in India.

Sad to see how disconnected from reality @jasveer10 is. It’s always easy to support bans when they affect someone else’s platform. Today it’s Telegram. Tomorrow it could be a @KnotDating, a social network, or any service that falls out of favor. Every platform seems expendable until it’s your own. First they came for @telegram, The people who didn’t use Telegram cheered. History tells us that’s not where these stories end.

Sagar Awatade@SagarAwatade

I don't know who else to tell this to, so I am going to tell my story here. Every day is a struggle for a young business, but the last few months have been harder than usual. We are a small Indian company. For more than ten years we have been building a homegrown brand in a product category dominated by big foreign players. There are almost no Indian names in this space. We set out to be one. We started in 2014. Over the years we began making parts in India instead of just importing, and we started selling in the US, Dubai, Nepal, Malaysia and South Africa. We showed up at global trade fairs to represent an Indian brand on the world stage. In 2023 we changed the import code we use for our product. We did not do this quietly. Every shipment was declared. Nothing was hidden. We didn't invent our approach. We followed written professional advice and the way this product is treated in markets around the world. And now we are facing a government demand running into tens of crores in duty recovery and penalties, plus personal penalties on the founders and even on an employee. For a company our size, this is not a fine we can pay and move on from. This ends us. We have not run from any of this. I am not built like that. It is not how I was raised. We have written to the authorities, met officials in person, and we have now filed a writ in the High Court. All we are asking for is a fair treatment. I set out to build in India and sell to the world. I am asking only that the system back honest founders trying to compete globally, instead of breaking them. The process is the process, and it exists for a reason. But process should not feel like punishment. From where I am standing today, it does. I am not giving up. I have worked too hard for this. If you have read this far, please share it. If you know someone who can help, point them my way. Help me get the word out.

That’s how PR works, brother. In his entire 16 year tenure, he hasn’t established a single government medical college, port, or harbour. He has never shown much interest in strengthening the public sector, public hospitals, or government schools. He is always focused on future dreams while neglecting the present. He has never won an election without an alliance, nor has he won consecutive elections on his own. Over the years, he has formed alliances with the Congress, BJP, and Communist parties whenever it suited his political strategy.

“My grandmother recently passed away and left her entire £800,000 estate to my parents. My parents are already comfortable – they own their home and have good pensions. I am currently renting a tiny flat in Bristol and desperately want to buy. I asked my parents if they would pass some of the inheritance straight to me for a deposit, but they said they want to use it to buy a holiday home in France and ‘enjoy their retirement’. Is it unreasonable of me to feel completely betrayed? Surely that money would change my life, whereas for them it’s just a luxury?”

According to her, women in India agree to arranged marriages primarily because of money, specifically, because men earn six- or seven-figure incomes. She believes that if women chose partners based on empathy and communication skills instead, most men in India would remain unmarried. Nowadays, everyone with a microphone on Instagram seems to think they're an intellectual. Typical feminist logic 🤡

when i was in india the men i met would go out of their way to tell me things like “my wife cooks dinner but then she must stand and wait for my mother to eat first.” they’d say it like they were really proud. i think the dynamic is something like: the mother spoils the son and this makes him very loyal to her. women have no power and are treated badly until they are old and have a DIL to subjugate, and at that point they take full advantage bc they’ve waited their entire life to have any status at all. anyway, seems like a fucking nightmare.
sympathetic opposition@sympatheticopp

i was wondering why when i read abt indian arranged marriages in india the structure seems so miserable but when i meet (older) indian couples, their arranged marriages seem pretty happy & i realized its bc im meeting them in america and they moved here without the mother in law
