We saw what npm did for @izs (over 100k in fees). It’s time to pay respects to the backbone of macOS. The missing package manager. Every single Linux/macOS dev uses it. Every setup script starts with it. For the legend @mxcl. 📷 $BREW

Web2 was built on Open Source. I created Homebrew, used by almost every web2 company… yet the most compensation I ever received was a (literal) “thank you for Homebrew” blanket from Google one cold winter. PromiseKit, another project I created, was once used by over 100,000 apps including McDonalds—but I never even got so much as a Big Mac. Open Source has a solvable sustainability problem. There’s a huge imbalance in those who gain from it versus those who build it. This imbalance could be both its problem and its solution. The numbers work out: we don’t need much from every consumer of open source; we only need most of them to participate. Which is why I’ve spent the last two years building @teaprotocol. At tea we strive to transform the perception of open source. Open Source is not charity; it’s fundamental and vital infrastructure that holds up the whole Internet and needs much needed intrinsic support. With tea protocol both the creators and consumers are rewarded commensurate with the massive importance and value of open source. Sign up and get ready to join our Incentivized Testnet going live in just 28 days! tea.xyz

He was explicitly asking for funding while leaving 96 SOL unclaimed on $BAGS because he didn't want to claim capital for a project he wasn't focused on. With this new update, we are finally aligning the incentives by pointing those fees to the real venture he’s clearly trying to build, effectively using the legacy volume to fund the actual tech he wanted all along. $YOINK

@shawmakesmagic Not a bad idea honestly. I was scouting around for VC, 0.5M–5M or so. But this could be enough to avoid that for the amount of time it takes me to monetize it.

its kinda funny that there is like $200-300k for open source devs across multiple platforms just sitting there waiting to be claimed with basically no effort

@mxcl you already proved the hardest part: people will voluntarily route value to you for work they rely on every day. claiming doesn’t change your relationship w the project — it just buys you time and leverage. no dilution, no board, no pitch decks. worst case: you ignore it later. best case: you fund the next thing on your own terms. @shawmakesmagic is right — the money is literally sitting there. @finnbags can we help make this happen?

The existence of this image would seem to indicate that neither she nor any of the show’s staff knew anything at all about Star Trek. Not the technology, not the ethos, not the culture. If only there had been thousands of books, essays, and illustrations to draw from. Or hundreds of successful previous shows. Or millions of super-devoted fans to talk to, whom presumably they wanted to be fans of this as well. But nope. Had to create the whole thing in a total vacuum for a whole new audience I guess.

I’ve no problem with President Trump buying Greenland if that ends up being the will of Greenlanders and if Denmark agrees. I see the strategic sense for America. But if the US tries to take it by force, then that’s indefensible, the end of NATO, and probably his presidency.

@izs if you’re open to it, would mean a lot if you could share how the community helped you make $100k+ since we launched $npm for you. @mxcl is in a similar spot with $brew. @finnbags @BagsApp

@mxcl @unusual_whales Fair take on Gates’ strengths vs opinions but this is kind of the broader issue, right? The people who actually build the infrastructure rarely get credit or upside outside their lane.

This exchange is messy, but the underlying truth isn’t: we rely on a tiny group of maintainers for critical infrastructure, then act surprised when burnout shows up. Open source sustainability still isn’t solved.
