Bad product idea: A password manager that only uses long strings of capital "I"s and lowercase "l"s.

Surely there are already people out there choreographing TikTok dance routines set to the #JWST hold music

Things that physics instructors should avoid #372: Giving a pantomimed demonstration of how a dashpot works using one's hands. 👉👌

"but abolishing the police is bad politics" - so is the murder of children, in less perverted societies

Imagine thinking the people who care about the murder of a child are radicals and that the people who argue for impunity for the murderer are the moral ones.

when synthesizing transit spectra double check to make sure you don't accidentally say the planet is larger than the star, that generally doesn't work well

The coming weeks are likely to be important for the future of ground-based astronomy in the face of the threat of satellite constellations. How is it a threat, what are astronomers doing, why are these weeks important? Thread 👇

This one goes out to everyone who has ever tried to convince an astronomer that astrology is "harmless fun" and to every astronomer who has been called "close-minded" for pointing out that it's crap.

Even if you're fully vaccinated, the CDC still recommends that you begin your exoplanet paper by citing the astonishing and baffling discovery of 51 Pegasi b (Mayor & Queloz 1995)

@aussiastronomer The real question is: Does being a scientist give you proficiency in Arcana or Nature?

FLUID DYNAMICS, holy crap. Normalize it as part of a grad Astro curriculum. Everything is *basically* a fluid on at least some scales. Traffic? A fluid. Hundreds of billions of stars? A fluid.

@aussiastronomer I'd say no. The excitement of spotting an Alaska or Hawai'i plate is well worth it.

@BernieSanders Lawmakers should be planning ahead to regulate a space-based economy. It will happen sooner or later, and I'd prefer that we figure it out *before* someone starts unilaterally strip-mining the Moon.

On our to-do list: 1) Short term: see if enough Senators will support some kind of increase in the minimum wage 2) Get a $15 minimum wage measure on the ballot in as many states as possible 3) Nominate Dem Senate candidates in PA, WI, NC, FL, and OH who support $15 min wage
