We dramatically underestimate how much change management it is going to take to automate most knowledge worker tasks. Between data being in legacy environments or systems or without good APIs, context missing for doing the task, teams that are less technical, and other factors, there’s still a lot of work to drive real AI transformation in an enterprise. This is actually great news if you’re building right now because the opportunity is to build the software bridges to make this easier, or to build new services firms to help with this change management. Opportunity is all around for those looking.

Silicon Valley thinks AI agents are a $20/mo self-serve subscription. Main Street is paying local agencies $10,000 just to turn them on. Everyone assumes AI will be bought primarily online like Slack or Zoom. I think they are wrong. Some of the biggest winners in the AI boom won't be the software vendors. It will be the humans installing it. Here is the reality of SMBs right now: • 54% lack internal AI expertise. • 41% have data quality too poor for AI to even work. • 41% already prefer buying AI through a local IT provider. You cannot "1-click install" a genius AI into a messy CRM or a 15-year-old server. It will just execute the wrong tasks at the speed of light. The AI software will be cheap and a lot will absolutely be bought online. Making it actually work for a messy, real-world business will be expensive. Very bullish on the "Do It For Me" economy being back.

We could use a little good news in WA right now -- the income tax is a crazy own-goal that will wreak havoc with the state's economy over the next decade, but at least they skipped QSBS (for now) and now killed non-competes -- let's take the wins where we find them cc @aviel

I banged on this issue quite a bit in Washington. Non startup people, and even a shocking amount of startup people, did not really get it. A silver lining among all the dumb shit they’ve been doing lately in that state.

Sick of AI doomerism but also keenly aware of reality? Us too, so we decided to do something about it. AI has forever changed software. It’s easier than ever to ship, but much harder to know what actually needs fixing. And even worse, there is a growing disconnect between folks in non-tech industries dealing with painful, daily headaches that AI can solve now and builders who can create solutions, but don’t know which problems actually matter. That’s the gap we’re closing with Foundations NEXT. It’s a simple pitch: bring the real problem. No deck, no startup BS, just the operational pain you live with. We’ll share it with AI-native builders at Foundations who can poke at it, refine it, and maybe build something useful. Best of all, they’ll build it with you. For free. And if it becomes something bigger, we’ll partner with you. To operators who keep muttering “this shouldn’t be this hard” take a look and drop a problem if it fits @ fndtns.org/next

Reminds me of: 1) Lie to people who want to be lied to, and you’ll get rich. 2) Tell the truth to those who want the truth, and you’ll make a living. 3)Tell the truth to those who want to be lied to, and you’ll go broke. You can make money honestly online, but it ain't easy.
derek guy@dieworkwear

my impression is that it's very easy to make money online so long as you're willing to be a boastful, ego-centric bullshitter and sell sham products to a growing fan base. you can easily be a millionaire this way. and perversely, this wealth only earns you more credibility

Dario Amodei just gave his first interview since the Pentagon blacklisted his company. The toll is visible on his face. He was asked one question. What would you say to the President right now? He didn’t hesitate. Amodei: “We are patriotic Americans. Everything we have done has been for the sake of this country.” Anthropic built their models to defend America. They were the first AI lab cleared for classified military systems. They wanted to help the warfighter. But the Pentagon demanded unrestricted access to fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance of American citizens. Amodei drew the line. The government responded with emergency Cold War powers. A supply chain designation normally reserved for foreign adversaries. A six-month federal phaseout ordered from Truth Social. Amodei: “When we were threatened with supply chain designation and Defense Production Act, which are unprecedented intrusions into the private economy, we exercised our classic First Amendment rights to speak up and disagree with the government.” The administration framed Anthropic’s refusal as anti-American. Amodei’s response dismantled that framing in one sentence. Amodei: “Disagreeing with the government is the most American thing in the world.” Here is the deeper paradox nobody in Washington wants to say out loud. We are in a geopolitical race against autocratic adversaries who use AI for mass surveillance of their own citizens and autonomous weapons with no human oversight. The Pentagon demanded that Anthropic build those exact capabilities for America. Amodei: “The red lines we have drawn, we drew because we believe that crossing those red lines is contrary to American values.” You cannot defeat authoritarianism by adopting its methods. You cannot defend the open society by forcing private companies to build its antithesis under threat of wartime emergency powers. Anthropic held the line. Got blacklisted for it. And came out the other side saying the same thing they said going in. That is what it actually looks like to mean it.

We have a brush fire on the doorsteps of the Washington tech industry created by the inept people governing our state and leaders in this industry don't have the courage or leadership to stand up and fight the disaster that's about to engulf their industry and our state. You live here and it behooves you to do something. Washington's past success was never inevitable. We benefitted from the comparative advantages of a business and tax friendly climate that have almost entirely been nuked in the last five years. And our Governor and legislature have imminent plans to make the situation much worse. It is entirely possible (and perhaps likely given WA's current trajectory) that Seattle (and WA more generally) follow the path of prior industrial powerhouses like Detroit and Cleveland that committed seppuku through years of horrendous policy. choices. Show some leadership. Speak to the politicians in Olympia, most of whom have never run so much as a lemonade stand, and let them know they're going to kill the golden goose that has brought so much prosperity to our state.

Holy crow you cannot even imagine how many of the top tech people in WA are telling me to go go go and tell this story. they can't do it - it's too desultory looking for current tech execs. I'm unemployed, and well known for having opinions across the city (sorry @ajassy - I still think you are the BEST!). And again, if any politician wants to talk with someone with #livedexperience as a WA native, Tech exec at the top three employers in the state, public school kid, and parent of three... I am here and DMs are open. WA GREAT PEOPLE: These olympia folks you don't know are trying to make sure your most successful kids and grandkids don't want to live here! WHAT THE HECK? Narrator aside...: not a single politician has reached out yet....

I believe it would be reasonable for our state budget to grow near the rate of inflation. That’s not even a partisan take…just seems like common sense. If we go back to just 2019, the state budget was about 50 billion. If that budget was increased at the rate of inflation, the budget today would be about 63 billion. The current budget proposed is about 80 billion. Inflation has increased about 26% since 2019, while the current state budget has increased by 66%. I could be wrong, but this would seem to suggest that the issue isn’t revenue, but over spending. My North Star for our state is fiscal responsibility.

Thank you everyone for all of your support. Washington State HB 2157, which would have severely hampered startups' ability to use LLMs in their products, is officially dead! If you want to learn more about that bill and others still in flight (as well as the fight in Olympia) be sure to check out my interview with State Rep Josh Penner!

Friends, Washington State SB 6229 (removes QSBS) is moving forward. No matter where you stand on raising income for the State, we cannot let this move forward as it will both decrease funding and damage an already struggling startup ecosystem. Our legislature is trying to kick us while we're down (startup formation is already in an absolute free fall) and we need your help to make sure that they know that. Please email Senators and their legislative aides. Below are links to a sample letter and their contact information. Personal outreach matters. Tell your startup story: Why did you choose Washington? Why this company? How long have you been building it? What does it mean to you and your team? How would a 9.9% tax on QSBS impact your future here?
