This is a type of chart crime: when you plot value tuples from a timeseries on a 2D scatter plot like this as if they were independent samples, you are leveraging temporal autocorrelation to magnify any existing x/y correlation and hide the actual variance. You're also hiding temporal distribution drift (the typical value range for x and y, and the relation between them, change over long periods)

I taught Claude to talk like a caveman to use 75% less tokens. normal claude: ~180 tokens for a web search task caveman claude: ~45 tokens for the same task "I executed the web search tool" = 8 tokens caveman version: "Tool work" = 2 tokens every single grunt swap saves 6-10 tokens. across a FULL task that's 50-100 tokens saved why does it work? caveman claude doesn't explain itself. it does its task first. gives the result. then stops. no "I'd be happy to help you with that." no "Let me search the web for you" no more unnecessary filler words "result. done. me stop." 50-75% burn reduction with usage limits getting tighter every week this might be the most practical hack out there right now

@halvarflake Well, if you are dead set on understanding this you can measure bw/latency while the issue is "live" too by running a benchmark instead of your actual workload, but that's the greatest experience

Dear Perf Twitterverse, I see performance variations between two identical runs (same code, same data, same VM type) on GCE VMs of up to 30% (!!!). I know noisy neighbors are a thing, but this seems to be insanely high. Is there a way to investigate outside of bare metal?

@realmemes6 I'm with you. It's all real, and I burn about $1000 of tokens a month now on top of my private account. I agree this will have hige implications, but it's very hard to understand, for me, how much are we gated by humans still given the amount of SW that's also still missing.

@damageboy I'm not theorizing, I just made an app/tool that automates something skilled people could do, but it does it better in ways that people can't. It would have been impossible to make this tool 6 months ago. And I built it without opening an IDE.

@lemire Claude for Excel works in Excel. Don't know if the "Word" version even exists

I am in Microsoft Word. I press Copilot. I ask for a table. The AI can't modify the Word document so it creates a new document in the cloud. It then allows me access the document through a link. Presumably I am supposed to go there, copy the table and put it in my Word document myself. Who designed this ? This is so obviously a low-effort implementation that I am baffled. It is almost as if they wanted to fail. Why can't Microsoft see that having direct access to Microsoft Word is an incredible edge that they could leverage to embed the AI directly? It is almost comical.
